If this narrative were true, then there would've hardly been any popular black acts from this era, which is exactly the opposite of what we see. Some of the most successful and most influential acts from the 50 and 60s were black.

They did well in my very white city of Vancouver at the time, almost yearly. My friend has a bunch of posters in a 3k sized venue.

I&T did "white" tv plenty of times and got very respectable billing on woodstock era festival bills that didn't scare anyone.

I think it's the material, wrong label connections and probably Ike stepping on the feet of the industry people due to heavy substance use.
