Anyone else agree that Dire Straits' Money For Nothing is one of the most awful songs of all time?
I was listening to Brothers In Arms in the car this morning, and when Money For Nothing came on, I immediately had this feeling that it was just awful. It's got way too much going on. I've heard it hundreds of times in my life, but for the first time broke it all down into individual greivances. Some thoughts:
• The big ambient intro with "I want my MTV" mantra being repeated.
• The huge booming Phil Collins drums
• The ZZ Top guitar tone
• The "ooma gooma" lyric
• The howling at one point
• Knopfler taking on an entirely different accent at one point in the song
• The lyrics about refrigerators, microwaves, color tvs...
• That heinous guitar tone.
• The "sticks out like a sore thumb" nature of that song juxtaposed against the rest of the album.
Anyone agree? Or anyone have a hot take about how this song is some grand statement against consumerism and trends and anything else?
Looks like you are in a small minority on your own thread.
LMAO!!!

First off, I love Dire Straits. I think Knopfler had one of the greatest clean guitar tones in the history of guitar playing, as evidenced by the amazing Alchemy Live version of Sultans of Swing.I was listening to Brothers In Arms in the car this morning, and when Money For Nothing came on, I immediately had this feeling that it was just awful. 'Brothers In Arms' is not as good an album as it appears to be but it is as good as it is.Rfreeman said:

It is not a good song by any means but I am sure I have heard countless worse songs in my life. It is better than "Who Let the Dogs Out?" and the entire MC Hammer catalog, for example.MGChicago said:
LOL, I casually told my wife about this thread a few minutes ago (but gave her no details), and mentioned Money For Nothing. I said it was by Dire Straits and she said "I thought it was by ZZ Top."LMAO!!!
