In my opinion the Disney+ decision was a mistake. I think that it dissipated what should have been a consistent release schedule. A book, a physical audio release and a video component. It seemed very bitty, to me. I was glad to get everything eventually but it did seem like a long, frustrating wait. The Beatles do not belong in this digital streaming world. Classy, physical releases are how they should be presented. I don't have a problem with additional digital delivery but these deluxe sets are the key releases. They are what gets discussed and treasured. Who recalls the one-off Beatles download set from years ago. It died a sad death and was not repeated.
Do these things properly. Whether everyone wants surround or not, make sure the blu-ray is included. It should be there as a complete package. The Lennon methodology (book/SDE/video) works and as an archive release system works. When experiments, such as the 'bootleg' download thing and the McCartney download only element in an archive release were tried they fell flat on their face.
Just because it is possible to present things in a different form does not mean it is the best way. Streaming may generate some numbers but it is a completely different way of consuming and I don't think it has the same legs as a physical release. It is more of a one-off, transient experience. I am pleased to be able to walk into a room take a set off the shelf and absorb myself in the tactile experience of opening a box and absorbing its contents. The alternative is more like a news bulleti - here today, gone tomorrow.
That is my view obviously and I respect the choices of others, I do think, however, that the mere volume of expectation here proves something. There is a need for physical releases and the joy that they bring.
Moans too! But that is human nature.
I'm still ten pages behind, so I must dash!
