Bruce Springsteen releasing a double album of "Soul Covers"?I saw this on twitter. Does anyone think this is real? Springsteen to release a double album of Soul Covers this fall. This seems totally ludicrous to me with Nebraska Anniversary this year. But who knows. While I loved his R&B work from his live shows in the 70/80s. I'm not sure his voice fits it anymore... Apparently the latest is `lesser-known songs'. I still think it's a bad idea but this makes a lot more sense. As long as he doesn't do a rap/hip-hop album..."Rocky Ground" was awful, though at least he wasn't the one doing the rapping. I just don't get the moralistic denunciatory don't-wait-and-see tone in discussions of the possible content of upcoming releases. "This seems totally ludicrous," "I still think it's a bad idea," "I'm not sure his voice fits it anymore".... It's not just here with slipping the knife in with the very first tentative steps of sifting through new Springsteen rumors, it's in every thread about new albums (and movies too — the torrent of preemptive abuse directed at the Scorsese/Jonah Hill Jerry Garcia biopic project was hilariously consumed with prophecies of terribleness). Human nature online is just so flipping weird. A covers album would be even worse than High Hopes. I really hope this ends up being just a rumor. I'd rather have new material. It IS ludicrous. The things Springsteen's doing lately make less and less sense. Let's hope this doesn't come with a dynamic pricing structure...! I don't think it's a bad idea in and of itself, I think the reactions are more in regards to what this is (presumably) replacing on the release schedule. If he'd already put out the much-rumored Tracks 2 or 82-84 vault dive sets, or had a new original LP in the pipeline, I don't think anyone would care if he did a fun, harmless bit of self-indulgent nostalgia in the form a covers album. It'd be Bruce's Blue & Lonesome, which is a great record. But this is like being Gary Cherone after the whole world thinks you're reuniting with David Lee Roth. Nothing wrong with it, just the timing. If there was ever a time for an album of new material or a Trax 2 composed mainly of unreleased songs, it would be now with the big tour coming up. I'd like it if Tracks 2 came out and the tour was cancelled. Let's just hope we don't see a bunch of tracks with the dreaded word - "featuring." Yawn. When an artist releases their soul covers album is when I start to think they have had it as a creative force. I suppose next up is his take on “The great American Songbook”. Breaking: Doctors Baffled - Bruce Springsteen Convinced He's Van MorrisonWhat does this mean for Tracks 2 or Nebraska/Born In The USA set? It means we'll all be dead or hard of hearing before it finally comes out. “Lesser known sings” is more reassuring than tackling the well-know classics that can’t be improved upon, imo. Or, "newly reimagined versions of well known classics". (U2, anyone?) I hate that word “reimagined.” It usually means “ WORSE than you can imagine.” God, that U2 album is going to be horrific. So, which vocal delivery? The shout? The twang? The high falsetto? Will it top Rod Stewart’s Soulbook? The man has hit a dead-end creatively. Am not too excited personally about this potential album but let's hear it first before deciding he is completely barren in a creative sense. I am not as optimistic as you are.

This happens in every Springsteen thread, unfortunately. It’s everywhere. The Ozzy thread, the Rings Of Power thread. They don’t like anything.

Does the idea of not buying or listening to something that is not of interest instead of just complaining about it ever cross anyone’s mind in Hoofyville?

A single album would be plenty Maybe an EP would have been better. At one point not too too long ago, I think Springsteen actually had a good soul voice. Whether he can pull it off now, and whether I would want an album of soul covers, is a different story. Well, the studio can be kind. With today’s engineering, they will be able to do a lot with his voice, although it will likely sound as polished as his plastic surgery looks — very unnatural. his fans have rights too, they earned the right to kvetch over the latest turn of events. give it a break this is a thread about a potential obscure soul songs cover album. its not an album which we are supposed to act like we know nothing about. back in the day i had zero interest in an album of well known Pete Seeger songs-dont know if there are any-much less obscure ones. there is a reason they are obscure. The 5-6 newly written songs on LTY are pretty clunky. Obvious songs about dead former band mates. He's written about 8 songs in nearly 10 years, most from a burst in April 2019 for LTY. Nothing else is known and Bruce himself admitted he went 7 years without writing songs, around the time he was doing his book. A soul album would be Sony giving way more than a half million dollars in third-party publishing. Seeger album in 2006 was lots of public domain songs. Bruce is desperately in need of someone to act as an editor other than Landau. Landau hasn't had any editing input since 1984. Maybe that's the problem. Springsteen has suffered from the lack of a true producer for decades. Exactly. There is a reason why so many of his albums over the past two decades have been so uneven, it is not just that his songwriting has deteriorated, but he lacks coherent vision to pull off these albums as the primary decision maker. I'd say that in the Brendan O'Brien era, he suffered more from the presence of one. I have said it for years on this form, I think Brendan O’Brien was one of the worst things that ever happened to Springsteen’s music. I remember having an open mind to the news, but also recognizing Springsteen historically sounded nothing like the contemporary bands O’Brien was associated with. It quickly became apparent that it was not an ideal fit for Springsteen’s music. I admit I was all for it. At the time I thought he needed to try someone else, and O’Brien seemed as good as any. That he worked primarily with younger bands seemed a plus. He’d also worked with Dylan, and I’m sure that weighed in his favor with the Springsteen camp. It took one album— The Rising— to realize it wasn’t a good fit. But O’Brien won a Grammy for it. Of course.

Wenner is not living in the real world. But why would he? He hasn’t lived there in decades. Puts in a plug for his bud’s new album. I guess we’ll have to wait and see Jann has been grooving to Bruce's new album and the rest of us are just awaiting an official announcement. Jon looks after his buddies. The fact the Wenner thinks the new album is "stunning" isn't exactly a reliable endorsement. Yep. Remember, this is the same guy that proclaimed “She’s The Boss” to be one of the best albums of the ‘80s… They are all part of the same PR machine. Inside the PR machine is an echo chamber. The chamber spits out adjectives like "legendary", "stunning", and "extraordinary" to describe Springsteen's work. At this point, I think we'd all settle for "good". Man, he sure is taking a lot of heat over an unheard, unreleased and as yet unconfirmed album.

Our new song got compared to Springsteen today. Scott, how far is Walmartville, PA from Harrisburg? I want you to go to Harrisburg, find a woman sobbing over her lost youth out on a patio, and serenade her.

I’m convinced Dr Zoom is one of those “fans” that hasn’t liked Bruce Since he stopped being a Dylan rip-off in ‘73. That’s a long time to hate your idol.

I quite like a couple of tracks off that quiet one he did, you know the one, where he'd obviously been listen to a lot of Suicide, and that's about it. I won't be buying his new album. I wouldn't occur to me to go onto a public forum and say even that. Oh, hang on

For years fans complained that Bruce didn't release enough music. Now he puts tuff out regularly, we complain about the quality! Maybe I'm reading too far into it, but between the Netflix Broadway thing ("I'm a fraud"), and the some of the comments in the Wenner thing, he seems to be kind of acknowledging "yup, a lot of this stuff is pretty much smoke & mirrors & BS. I spun one hell of a myth, and along with my talent it made me a zillionaire." Maybe the truth will set him free. looking back, that Tom Joad album sure feels contrived. I think it's called 'an opinion', and as such is a normal part of human conversation. No different to, or less valid than, 'wow, can't wait', 'this is gonna be great' and 'long overdue' etc etc. Just different people's differing opinions. Hardly 'moralistic' or 'slipping the knife in' . Human nature online is largely opinion. Welcome to the internet. Wow. You really think my post was extreme?? How embarrassing for you. Some news for you - Opinions aren’t necessarily factual. That’s why they’re called “opinions”, not “facts”. I haven’t seen any extreme views in this thread whatsoever, just a discussion between people who like the idea and people who aren’t so keen. Hardly the stuff of “fanboys “ being extreme. And you really should check your own posts before requesting that people be “semi literate” . But thanks, you gave me a good laugh this morning.
