I never entirely bought John’s reason for leaving britain. If he said, ‘I want to live in New York, because it’s exciting, whereas London is boring’, I’d have said nothing. But the idea that he liked the fact that ‘no one bothered’ him in NYC is bull, because plenty of people did. In britain, by 1970, he was largely viewed as a freak and a flake, though still making good records; America/Canada (where he had access to Pierre Trudeau) was more likely to take him seriously, hassles from Nixon notwithstanding. He is viewed very equivocally in britain. The reaction to the bed-ins etc, was one of a collective rolling of eyes. And, if you study the press at the time, the Beatles (though still popular) had become old news by the time they split up. Yes, they were still scoring hit singles and their albums went to number one by default, but the momentum was now with the emerging underground groups like Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull and (most of all) Led Zeppelin. In American, their popularity never wavered, but remained consistent from 1964 to the 1970 split, and beyond. America never really got over the Beatles; britain moved on. You mean Beatle fans in America of course. Huge sectors of the American population never gave much of a crap about Beatles. Plenty of Americans regarded Lennon with contempt and still do. Of course. But their American fanbase (which is huge, and varies from the casual to the intensest of the intense) still longs for them, still sentimentalises them, still wishes they were still a going concern. How would you characterize their British fanbase then? Relatively easygoing, with a fair degree of cynicism toward the individual characters of the band. McCartney is not revered and many resent him for his vast wealth: there is a narrative that he failed to fulfil his potential once out of the Beatles and the Frog Chorus is regularly dragged up as his most representative work. It’s for this reason that McCartney has apparently said his favourite fans are the Germans - it’s his second biggest market but they’re not as intense as the Americans, and there’s no resentment of his wealth. |

Since Kiss have been mentioned (as I thought they would be) - Kiss’s music is not quite as anti-intellectual as it’s sometimes taken for. A song like Goin’ Blind, for instance, explores the relationship between a man in his nineties and a girl in her teens, and doesn’t do so in ‘sensationalist’ terms; there’s a highly cerebral number on the Revenge album (can’t think of the title offhand) where Gene focuses on the abstract topic of the existence (or otherwise) of a deity. ‘Great Expectations’ looks at a band’s relationship to its audience and Do You Love Me?is written from the pov of a self-aware rock person, who suspects he’s desirable for his bling rather than his finer qualities (if he has any). This is not the ‘big, dumb rock’ that Kiss is supposed to specialise in. And, anyway: isn’t there actually something ‘intellectual’ about the way Kiss approached music? In the early days, they consciously simplified what they did, to create a band that would be embraced by people who didn’t want prog rock or earnest singer-songwriter stuff? Gene and Paul probably qualify as intellectuals, as their memoirs make clear. |

As an ex-fanboy of certain artists, I now operate a zero tolerance policy towards fanboyism. Fanboys (and fangirls) are just tedious, know-nothing individuals. They may be able to use youth as an excuse (though by no means all of them can) but they need to be shown the error of their ways in no uncertain terms. Then, if they curb their excesses, they will have fewer embarrassing memories to torture themselves with in later life (I'm an altruist, you see). |
