I guess I don't understand anymore what the criteria is for R&R. I mean, Notorious B.I.G. and Whitney Houston? Both legends in their respective genres but not what I would call "rock music". Just bizarre choices, IMO. And to say nothing of the fact that the likes of Big Star, The Replacements and Pixies aren't ever nominated. I mean, I know those bands aren't everyone's cup of tea but to completely ignore them? Their collective influence is probably more consequential than maybe the last 10 years of inductees combined. Welcome rjp! Not even close...

I’ll take Kendrick over almost every stupid band they whine about not being inducted.

Lol! Biggie had more rock'n'roll swagger than Foghat, Zevon and Pixies combined. And I dig two of the three white acts I just mentioned. I love these dipshits with their narrow definitions of rock. And Whitney Huston being anti-rock?! Fucking pedants and gatekeepers are way more anti-rock. They're all dipshits except for me, of course. The barn door is already open on non-rock bands anyway so I don't know why I do a double take every year; I guess I'm just a very literal person. Couldn't care less about Foghat or Zevon... but you're right, Christopher Wallace had a lot more swagger than Charles Thompson does.

I love your quote COLA. I read it not long after buying my first "nice" (re: non digital Timex) and I instantly questioned my indie morals – I love Steve Albini.
In all seriousness though: What should the criterion be for nomination to the RRHOF?

In all seriousness though: What should the criterion be for nomination to the RRHOF? None. The whole concept is stupid. At least with sports you have stats to somewhat justify induction. Music is too subjective. Sales? No. Influence? Who is to say who influenced who? Can’t be done. I visited once and and it was entirely underwhelming. Staring at underwear and guitars does nothing for me.

Their ongoing fixation with canonizing ancient cutout bin bullshit like the Raspberries and Foghat is, well, it's definitely SHitey. I can name one fucking Rasperries song. And it’s shit.

I like The Raspberries alright, but not sure why they're always brought up in this yearly thread. Check out their shameless, but great Who rip here:

Todd Rundgren is my favorite, but I think it's most likely he'll get the Award For Musical Excellence to honor his production work as well. One other thing? His base is Cleveland. I'm not kidding. If he's voted in this year, when the ceremony is in Cleveland, it's going to be nuts. He has a small but deeply devoted fan base, and they are centered in Cleveland. I just got back from the 12th annual "Rundgren Radio" party, and we took over two hotels , had three tribute bands and were the most enthusiastic fans at the White Album show he did with Christopher Cross, Micky Dolenz, Jason Scheff of Chicago) and Joey Molland of Badfinger. Personally, at this point, without ELP, GFR, and AIC not inducted, I really don't give F if anyone else gets in. Taylor Swift, of course, will be a slam-dunk first-ballot inductee. She will no doubt be the first of the `today's country' nominations in the RandRHOF. How is Jethro Tull not even on the list? I despise this institution. No j Geils and doobies what a f in joke we all know it's a joke and we all keep getting pissed off...that's not going to change considering who's in charge... I'm pretty well known here as a huge Todd Rundgren fan, and while I would love to see him get in for his career as a musician, I think he stands the best chance of being inducted via the Award For Musical Excellence/Sideman/Nile Rogers/Let's Give Ringo One As Well award. Because despite his musical and songwriting gifts, he's had the most impact on music as a producer. For many years, Todd was the equivalent of a "corporate turn-around artist", the guy record companies would call in to take ailing bands and give them a hit record - Grand Funk, XTC, The Psychedelic Furs, Badfinger. He would do anything necessary - write a song for them, do an uncredited co-write, play guitar, sing. Like you, I am of the opinion that they will give Todd the Award For Musical Excellence to honor his undeniable production success. Todd would be proud on your fandom...I am in awe how much you dig him...I feel that way about my favorite artists as well...: ) Thank you. I'm aware he can rub people the wrong way, and has a legendarily sarcastic sense of humor (I've been on the receiving end) but he really is a genius and one of my two favorite songwriters, along with Kate Bush. Billboard asked Todd about all the hoo-ha: Todd Rundgren Is a 'No Comment' On His Rock Hall Nomination, But... "I didn't expect it and have never cared about it. The hardest thing was keeping my fans' expectations within reasonable bounds because they are very naive about it. I'm not; It's some weird Illuminati thing and nobody understands how it works and who does the voting and the nominee selections and all that sort of crap. "I'm not looking for some organization to acknowledge me, somehow. Besides, the Hall of Fame doesn't make any sense to me because musicians don't have to retire. Athletes retire, and that's when they go into the Hall of Fame, because they're not playing anymore. But everybody (the Rock Hall) is inducting now is still playing, so how can you say you've got the measure of them? You don't. So, no, I really don't care. "I've never really taken the whole thing seriously. I've never watched any of those shows. I don't pay attention to who wins. I do recognize it as an exercise for the fans, especially at this phase, and I'm happy they have the opportunity to make their declarations about who they think should be in and that sort of thing -- the reality being all those fan votes equal one vote out of a thousand ballots or whatever it is. I have no idea what the ultimate outcome will be, so I don't want to invest myself in it." Boy do they hate Tull ,Crimson,,ELP to let in some of these mostly lame groups Still no Joe Cocker, on the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.

I've lived near Cleveland all my life and being a Raspberries fan is supposed to be in our DNA. I always thought Go All the Way was the song that showed the most promise ever with it's beginning riffs, but then Eric Carmen starts singing some utterly forgettable ballad. Picking up their records at garage sales for 50 cents and trading them in to record stores around here has been pretty worthwhile, though.
Oh, and Todd was huge here in the 70's. Really huge. He can still get a pretty good crowd of boomers in one room to see him, but he's expanded to including the Akron area (35 minutes away) because he can hit town a little too often. My sons are both in their 30's and have no idea who Todd was. I'm on the younger side of what his fan base is. He's not even getting played on the dumb Saturday Night House Party radio show anymore on the Classic Rock Station. They've moved on to Guns N Roses and hair metal. It's funny what some people consider "classic" rock. In 20 years those people will wonder why the classic rock station plays Foo Fighters and Taylor Swift. It's all just oldies on radio.
