I don't know how it was recorded but it sounds like the cowbell was just played by the drummer as part of his kit. Did all-time pop genius Todd just double it? Whoopee-friggin'-do. There was a podcast with Andy that seems to have been removed cuz he REALLY laid into Rundgren. It was fierce. The whole band got nasty urinary infections from the well water on his property. He had a "solar powered BBQ" that supposedly resulted in them eating "warm, raw meat". My favourite part was how they would launch into the Munster's theme when they saw him approaching the studio from his house. Hahahaha! That's amazing. Do any of these fanboys consider that Todd never achieved superstardom because he's a really ugly guy? Having spent an unreasonable amount of time searching for info on "We're an American Band" just now, I can't even find verification that Todd played the amazing freaking cowbell on it. Has DeVoe been wrong all along? Now I'm definitely not voting for him to get into the Hall.

He does have a very high opinion of himself. He thinks he's too good for all the stuff he's most known for. Too good for the Dolls. Too good for Meat Loaf. And yeah, Bat Out of Hell is goofy but it's also the best thing that ever happened to his life. No way he'd have that place in Kauai without it. Utopia wasn't going to get him there. He should shut the fuck and be thankful for Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Remember DeVoe's post where he tried to convince us BOOH was a Springsteen spoof? Um yeah. no. Yes I do. Todd said some shit about how the only way he could deal with it was to approach it as a parody, and of course DeVoe thought that was wonderful and hilarious. DeVoe always wants it both ways on this stuff. It's always like ''ha ha Todd knew it was just a joke....and btw, did you know Todd did the motorcycle guitar? That was Todd's idea!"

It's horse shit cuz Steinman's stuff was always bombastic and poofy.

And yet somehow everyone assumed he was able to produce an offspring as beautiful as Liv Tyler, including Liv herself.

Rock and roll wasn’t an art form created solely by black artists; it was an art form created by the synthesis of black and white musics. I don’t think Janet Jackson should be in the RRHOF; I also don’t think, as I noted above, that Garth Brooks should be in the RRHOF. Painting anyone who disagrees with letting any successful recording artist from any genre of music in the RRHOF as a racist is a straw man argument. Yeah but how many fans of Janet Jackson, Dionne Warwick, JayZ, or any number of the non-rock acts are going to be paying admission just to see that one person? Most classic rock bands were still doing quite well up until the pandemic and their music had longer staying power for whatever reason than pop or rap groups had. Rock audiences are very loyal. You can justify it anyway you want. There is no excuse to be excluding rock acts that have done the hard work and have built loyal fan bases over some pop or rap star that is no longer relevant and only in there to show “diversity”. I am sure that if there was ever a Rap hall of fame that you would never see a Jackson Browne or Joni Mitchell in there. Todd is always walked his own line, and has rarely been reticent to shoot off his mouth when something is bugging him. So really, this is nothing new. My complaint would be that there seems to be a bias by the Rock and roll Hall of Fame against royalty. For example no King Sunny Ade, no Sir Mix a Lot, no Queen Latifah. There's positively no excuse for that. I mean, what's more rock and roll than a member of royalty getting their freak on?

Actually, Driver 8/John Hunter/Spencer R, Rock and Roll pretty much was created by black artists- dudes like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley...the first true whitebread rocker (as opposed to coattail riding opportunists like Bill Haley) was Buddy Holly and he came along a couple of years later. Not, mind you, that I would expect a southern boy like yerself to acknowledge that, Driver/Hunter/Spencer...

So AudiophilePhil either got a suspension or took his ball and went home. Hasn’t been seen since his Fela comment.

It was on Maron's podcast that he called Andy Partridge a prick and a pussy, all because he had his own ideas about how 'Skylarking' should sound and didn't defer to the great Runtlestuntle.
I don't know Partridge, but while he was on Twitter, he seemed like the humblest, gentlest guy in the world. Fuck Todd Rundgren.

I can't begin to count how many interviews with Andy Partridge I have listened to. The guy is the most intelligent, open and hilarious musician ever. The only reason they used TR is because Virgin forced him to use an American producer, and the only guy on the list he recognized was Rundgren. On a very recent podcast he said "go ask the guys from Badfinger, or The Band, or Patti Smith what they thought about working with Rundgren. They all have the same stories". He's a knob.

Trying to think of an artist that worked with Todd Rundgren more than once.

He started work with Badfinger on their followup to Straight Up, but left after producing two songs, I believe over money.
By all accounts Rundgren is a dick, but he did manage to coax Badfinger's best work out of them.

The NY Dolls used him again for one of their reunion records. I think a lot of that had to do with being able to record at Todd's place in Kauai.
