A short-lived policy that included SOME singles, not all. I've repeatedly mentioned that this Billboard policy included Come Together/Something and The Long and Winding Road/For You Blue, but not Let It Be/You Know My Name which was released between other two singles. As far as Billboard and label interference go... I suggest you weren't around back then to know how much collusion there was. Would it shock you that Allen Klein "suggested" the policy change at Billboard? All for the publicity touting the lads latest number one, double A-side smash! This doesn't even get into the interference and collusion from radio that started in the 50's, through the whole "payola" scandal up to more current times before radio plays were dropped from their tabulating methods.By the way, all those UK trade mags back in the day had their own "anomalies" too. Strict sales receipts weren't always used. It often became a popularity contest and there was no way to know if sales were artificially boosted or not. Ron

I call BS on that claim - so CITATION NEEDED!!!brainwashed said:
I lived it... I don't have to cite some official blurb. Shall I go into the whole sordid Morris Levy affair and explain how HE personally threatened radio stations, the trade magazines, stores and the like to push chart placings for his stable of artists. You can choose not to believe me if you so desire. Under your scenario For You Blue obviously qualified as a joint number 1... although there is no way to quantify HOW many radio plays it got, if any. I don't recall it ever being played and I always loved the song. The only time I heard it AND taped it, was when WBCN in Boston played one of the Get Back acetates with the false starts and giggles. Again, my thoughts are based on real-life experiences, including working for Levy in the late 70's. I also knew many associates at Capitol and don't make claims about Klein without direct knowledge. ..that you refuse to back up with evidence?!BTW "I lived it" is not a valid argument - especially when its immediately followed by "I don't have to cite..."
...and Morris Levy's criminality and mob-like tactics are totally irrelevant to this conversation. "What-about-ism" ISN'T a valid argument.
...and your anecdotal evidence about how often you heard what was probably only a regional hit 'For You Blue' (if its #71 status is Cashbox is any indication) - is also irrelevant to the conversation. A #71 song is not getting regular airplay nationwide. It would have been a regional hit. For example it could have been a regional hit in say New York so you wouldn't hear it in LA - or vice versa.
But if you really are the "authoritative expert" you are claiming to be ("I worked for..", "I also knew many associates at...") you would already know this, wouldn't you?
My observations:
1 - B-Sides used to chart separately before Billboard's policy change, after the policy change they didn't and were instead coupled with their A-Side.
2 - In very nearly every case in Cashbox and Record World where they still charted the songs separately, those B-sides that charted separately in those magazines were combined with their A-sides in Billboard
3 - In very nearly every case in Cashbox and Record World where they still charted the songs separately, those B-sides that failed to chart at all in those magazines were NOT combined with their A-sides in Billboard.
Your assertions:
1 - You worked for Morris Levy.
Well assuming that's even true what does that prove about Allen Klein - or Billboard for that matter? "Levy threatened people..." ...and...?!
2 - you personally didn't hear a low charting regional hit on the radio in your region - ...and...?!
3 - you knew people at Capitol ...AND...?!?! Last I checked Capitol is not not Billboard, nor is it Allen Klein, so...
BTW you really NEED to look up Occam's Razor!
...or you could just provide some...you know... FACTS to back you up.
Again you said:
"I lived it... I don't have to cite..."
Wow - just WOW!!!
You do realize that WE didn't live it (nor are we required to believe your claim that you DID)... so you DO have to cite if you want anyone to actually believe you!
