Well listen. I agree Apple is redressing the same stuff to create a product. Not offering as much New ( unheard by public ) material from the archives as I & others would prefer.BUT I'd hardly call it "lipstick on a pig". It's still the Beatles, still Sgt. Pepper & still has new mixes & lots of alternate takes. New artwork.
Is it worth a $140. USD. Probably not to me. When you have trouble convincing me, then Apple is probably doing something wrong. I'm as big a Beatle & solo Beatle fan as anybody on the planet. Along with lots of others here on the board.
First they call these extra takes "outtakes" 34 outtakes or 26 outtakes whatever they said... TRUTH. There are zero outtakes NONE... There are a whole bunch of alternate takes, but that's a different thing.
What's the difference between an Outtake & an alternate take ? QUITE A LOT. Basically "That Means A Lot" & "Leave My Kitten Alone" from Beatles Anthology were outtakes.
Why ? Because Kitten & That Means a lot, were good studio recordings by the Beatles never available to the public before. ( Bootlegs discounted ) new songs...
But six different takes of Getting Better or five different takes of Lucy In The Sky are called alternate takes. We already knew Lucy very well as a song, as a record, even in different mixes & versions.
So Apple knows the difference, believe that. Believe they flat out lied & misled millions of people from the initial advertising touting dozens of outtakes. THERE WERE NO OUTTAKES.
A couple other disappointments for me. I have the expensive one, is it 5 discs ? Nowhere is there a version of the album including SFF & Penny Lane in the running order with the other 13 songs... Not one disc.
Nowhere does Only A Northern song appear anywhere in the set. Carnival of light or even a 3-4 minute excerpt don't appear at all.
The new mix of the album by Giles doesn't outdo the original mixes, & doesn't break much new ground. Safe, almost ordinary.
Lots of packaging & art, that's nice cool. Who cares !!!!!
Makes me gun-shy to buy more Beatles product modeled on the recent Sgt Pepper.
But it's not LIPSTICK ON A PIG..
Apple doesn't really care about making fans happy, out of touch ? Who knows.
