Swap out This Year’s Model for My Aim Is True and that’s the extent of my Elvis Costello collection.

Fifteen or twenty years ago, there was a short article in Mojo about Elvis Costello that basically described him as a one-trick-poney, building songs around phrases that he simply deconstructs to highlight the cliché behind them, apart from a few songs not dripping in irony such as "I Want You". I guess that the writer was quickly terminated there, as they put a few feature pieces on him to address the insult. That said, Costello hasn't landed a cover there this century...

It's true that lots of British bands who came about in the late 70s all had rushed and mediocre second albums: the Stranglers, the Clash, the Damned, XTC, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Jam.... I'm sure there are tons of them. I guess the record companies' thinking was to squeeze the bands as much and as quickly as possible before this new wave fad died. No More Heroes I've always thought was one of their best -- funny, ugly & blunt. For me, from that era/genre the Stranglers’ Old Testament box is second only to Datapanik In The Year Zero. Problem Child single from the Damned’s 2nd is also a favorite.

There's not much wrong with any of the acts you guys have mentioned in this thread, in my addled opinion.

I don't even listen to 90 percent of the acts mentioned in this thread. I like Elvis Costello from the fairly little that I've heard but have no desire to seek out more.

I guess the Town & Country EP is the second Barry Andrews record? All four of those songs are quite good as well. The writing and performances and are far, far better than anything he and XTC did on Go 2. Yeah, I don't know if Virgin were trying to angle for Barry Andrews to become a solo star, but he got a single then Town & Country in a short space of time. I've had to (ugh) needledrop them from the records because they've not been released digitally as far as I know. XTC famously rejected Sargasso Bar (on Town & Country) since he'd already had four songs recorded for Go 2 (and then left two of them off), and Andy Partridge thought he was getting too much album space at his expense. They did do some sort of recording for it though: Edit: Shriekback's site is selling a CD of post-XTC pre-Shriekback Barry Andrews tracks including Town & Country called 'Lost Pop Songs' for a decent six quid. It's also streaming some of the tracks in full: shriekback.com/album/1513771/lost-pop-songs

Machine Gun Etiquette is a classic, the Black Album is great, and Strawberries is pretty good.

The Damned have really held up better than just about any other artists from that era. Everything up to and including Strawberries still rips and sounds fresh.

There are also a some third-rate dull tracks like You Take My Money, Your Eyes etc. that no production could have helped, and some corny "punk" lyrics. Love the Damned but that one is just moments.
