Can your mental health be permanently ruined by a song?
I think it's safe to say mine was. I heard "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty for the first time when I was 12 years old. It was morning in January, I was still lying in bed, and my mom had this song on the stereo in the next room. Everything about the song - the saxophone solos, the lyrics, the keyboards, guitar solo, etc. gave me an extreme feeling of fear and anxiety. No other song has caused me to feel this way, and I LOVE music of all genres from the 1950s to today, including classic rock and all kinds of rock. I've heard thousands of songs in my life. Anyway, this song caused a fear and anxiety reaction in me when I was 12, and in the year after that was when my severe anxiety and depression disorders developed that I still have today at age 39 (40 in a few weeks).
I've tried exposure therapy (by myself) with this song many times since I was about 13, but it definitely doesn't work. Hearing even 5 seconds of this song still causes me extreme anxiety.
I'm afraid this song will torment my mind the rest of my life. Not sure why I'm sharing this here, I just felt like I needed to share it with someone. I've never told anyone in real life. It's one of those weights on my chest and my mind that I needed to unload.
