Eight Democrat senators, including two from my state, voted to kill the $15 minimum wage as part of the Covid relief bill. Fuck you Democrats. Anyone telling me the Dems are the lessor of two evils can go fuck right the fuck off. Kyrsten Sinema looked downright jubilant voting thumbs down for the bill. This is bad. *Really* bad. Dems are the lesser of two evils.

I don't want to be a Biden apologist, but goddam. You'd think the armed forces of the country you'd spent 20 years and millions on to support and train might show half an interest in defending their own country. ARVN, anyone?

I would think that many of the people who love Afghanistan and hate the Taliban have long been out, having seen the writing on the wall way back when. Of course, in 20 years, a whole new generation has emerged that might not be so happy about their new extremist leaders.

Of course a 20 year imperial occupying force isn't going to drive people into the hands of the opposition regardless of their ideology.

I'm getting sick of all the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching in the media about this (and don't get me started on these fucking GOP hypocrites). The outcome would have been exactly the same whether we pull out now, pull out in 5 years, or pull out in 50 years. As soon as the Taliban started moving in, the entire government and military folded like a cheap suit (as expected). We never should have been in that hellhole in the first place. What this all proves is that the Taliban is extremely patient. All they had to do was wait us out.

Right wing folks' collective amnesia over Trump's plan to have the troops out much earlier.

The agreement the previous administration signed with the Taliban told the Afghan government and military that it was all over and it was time to look out for yourself. It's not a coincidence that total collapse quickly followed the final withdrawal date.
What's understated is the Taliban's popularity in Afghanistan, especially outside of Kabul.

What worries me the most is that I feel like we're just resetting the clock. The Taliban is nothing but the middle east's version of Republicans. I'm worried about the extremism. The Taliban took over in, what...1996? And al Qaeda was allowed to operate there. Who's to say the whole scenario doesn't play out again? It doesn't seem so long ago, but fuck me...20 years have gone by. I'm not trying to hold this over Biden's head. Nor am I trying to hold this over donnie's head. This goes back a long way. But when I hear Taliban, I think 9/11. Probably just me, but that scares me.

Just consider this a gap year, maybe invade and occupy some other country for a change.

But when I hear Taliban, I think 9/11. Probably just me, but that scares me. The Taliban had about as much to do with 9/11 as Saddam Hussein, i.e. nothing. They were and are provincial thugs who have a difficult enough time holding their own territory together to terrorize. Their international influence and reach is zilch. It would be much more on the money to say that when you hear "Saudi Arabia," you think 9/11. I already see the Brits — some former Ministry of Defence jerk turned "consultant" (as they do) and some City of London twit — talking up "exciting new anti-terrorism investment opportunities." You heard it here first! Be sure to get in on the ground floor! The grifting continues, just (for now) a little closer to home. I know the Taliban didn't have direct involvement, but what ties it together for me was Bin Laden ran his little monkey bar show in Afghanistan, and that was while the Taliban had hold of the country. I have no illusions about the who's and the what's of what happened, I guess I'm just worried about more radical extremism coming from there again. Like how we fucked around and killed Saddam and got isis (or was it isil?) out of the deal. Then again, I'm much more worried about homegrown terrorists these days.
