“Fiddle About” asking the important questions:
“Just started buying new vinyl in earnest the past year or so, esp RSD titles. Do folks around here generally leave plastic wrap on their new albums and just slice one edge open to get the record out? I have been tearing off the wrap and tossing it, but you do lose the descriptive stickers. Does plastic wrap affect resale or trade value? I guess you could cut and remove the wrap altogether for gatefold albums too, and replace it when you are done looking at the gatefold. Thanks!”

Imagine buying vinyl as a way to recapture our younger days when listening to music was pleasurable and forgetting that vinyl was just the technology we had to listen to music on demand back then. I've owned a ludicrous number of records, tapes, CDs, and filesets in my life because I love it. It's my favorite form of entertainment. I can't imagine worrying about the shrink wrap. People used to joke about the shrink wrap on CDs. The point of the joke was we were eager to play the fucking thing & disliked having to surgically remove cellophane and multiple adhesive seals.

Sadder: the guy chooses to call himself "Fiddle About" in emulation of a character whose sole identifying trait is being a child molester. Ha. I didn't even notice that. I might not have bothered to complain about his post if I hadn't spaced his screen name.

I don't get this thing about hype stickers. It's what the Youtube vinyl people talk about all the time. "I bought an original Love Beach in shrink with hype stickers."
So fucking what. No one ever used to do that. We just stuck them in bags to protect the cover and that's it. I like seeing the ones that buy 35 year old still sealed records for top buck and they open them up and the record is unplayable. Still sealed records used to be cheap because of not knowing what you're buying. I like seeing new people collect records because it makes most of the stuff about it easier for me, but the new crowd grew up watching their parents keep their sneakers and Star Wars toys in the box and never touching them and they seem to think that all their records will just appreciate in value. It just seems so different to how people my age have used records our whole lives, but more power to them.
