Brickwalling and clipping were actual problems. Well executed compression, however excessive they might consider it, solves that problem and leads to good results. But where's the fun in that, right? Wait until they learn about compression pedals for guitars.

A lot of it boils down to "well sure, the remaster sounds better, but the numbers and waveforms tell a different story." Thankfully, I don't look at waveforms and DLR numbers. I listen to music.

Reading DR numbers and seismographs and deciding you don't like how something sounds is like looking at the ingredients of a dish and determining solely from that that you don't like how it tastes.

Nobody gives a fuck about Dynamic Range except them. Never heard a human being even mention it anywhere else either online or in real life. It’s funny when they use the loudness wars as their excuse for not following music from the past 20-30 years. “I swear I’d be so open minded to listen to new stuff that isn’t boomer music made by white guys in the 60s and 70s if only it wasn’t so brickwallled!” I know it’s all brick walled because I don’t listen to any of it!

Me testing a record's DR numbers to make sure no brickwalled music contaminates my listening room.

Hey guys Im going to rebuy the Rush discography on both CD and high resolution digital files from HDTracks for $24.99 each because I read on SH.TV that my remasters have poor dynamic range.

I want to master something where the volume is constantly shifting from a soft whisper to 120 dB of noise every few seconds. The DR number will be off the fucking charts. Do you think the SHites would buy it?

I guess I'm a dork because I definitely at least check out DR values if there are older pressings as well as new remasters available. I just ordered a CD yesterday where the OG was DR 14 and the remaster is a 7. I'm not obsessive about it but will take a quick look to help make a decision.

What does that really tell you though? It could mean that the original was bass-shy and the new remaster has it boosted to where it should be, or a million other possibilities.

It tells me that Rock Candy has fucked up yet another reissue. I've heard enough of these remasters side-by-side to original issues to know that, in general, they're trash. I'll take my chance with the higher DR in this case.

Well, I’m not going to purposely go out of my way to buy something that sounds like shit.

The problem is that the DR meter is a flawed idea that doesn't tell you anything even about the actual dynamic range. I would not use it as an indicator of anything. Never mind EQ. I don’t care about DR if the highs give me a shave.
