Costco just sent me an email of online exclusives. Get a load of this: Do the Beatard SHites know this thing even exists?

It actually looks like a half decent turntable for 350 bucks, but you have to use a platter mat with a glass platter, so you can't see through it. If it's just going in your ass it should be okay, though.

I’ve seen a YouTube video of the turntable in action.
Do any of you know what the purpose of the spinning weight is? (It’s the little thing that look like a fishing sinker.)
Wouldn’t something spinning around back and forth negatively affect playback?

It’s the anti skate system. It’s debatable if they even do anything you can hear or not, but most turntables use something for it these days. It shouldn’t move around much, unless you’re a little rough with it. Supposedly they keep the stylus in the center of the groove, against the inner and outer wall equally. There’s hundreds of pages of blather about anti skate on Hoofy’s site. It’s more boring than you’d expect.

I’d think having one of those things whirring around in the back of the TT would be somewhat annoying. It’s not very subtle:

I think they have a fan in that room, or it's the way the thing it's on is turning. They don't usually look like they're doing anything, which is entirely possible.

I had never seen one of those things before, and had thought it was the audiophile equivalent of the machine that goes ping.

I’ve got the ‘proper’ version of that turntable and the counterweight isn’t noticeable until you need to make some adjustments and then it’s just a pain in the backside to put it back on the tonearm. (SHiTE alert) I’ve also switched the black platter for a frosted one (a bit like the one on the Beatles player) and no slipmat, so it looks cool when I’m playing coloured vinyl.
