I clearly haven't lived. Had no idea what Oppo is / was until I saw this thread. In fact I'm still not sure what it is. Seems to be some kind of DVD player that people pay a lot of money for?

Oppo is a Chinese company that at some point more or less took the place of Pioneer regarding high-end players for video enthusiasts. They had top of the line graphic chips for upscaling and additional processing, discrete analog multichannel audio outputs, etc. I've got one because they were some of the only players that could be turned into region free Blu-ray players (there are some players that can be turned into region free players for DVD, Oppo offered one of the only models that, with an extra chip, could do that for Blu-ray too). They had UHD Blu-ray players but ultimately killed the entire product line to focus on phones instead.

Those BD and UHD players are just more outdated status symbols for dumbfucks. Buy a Sony or Panasonic and you're golden. I bought a MINTY open-box, mid-range PANNY UHD player at Best Buy for $150 and then bought some modified firmware for 40 euros from some weirdo in Germany. Now I have an ENDGAME, GIANT KILLER player that's totally region-free for BD and DVD (UHD is already region-free), plays native PAL content and has all the bells and whistles from the $400-more-expensive model unlocked.
