STeVe:
Buddy and Judy; what a great duet album that would have been!
Ah, shaking off my dreams....Well, two new first time compact disc stereo releases from Hit Parade Records in Canada.
First, "The Definitive Buddy Holly - 30 Classics."
This is a welcome release. His 30 most popular recordings, all in natural sounding stereophonic sound for the first time. I know, not usually my thing, but look, us oldtimers have most of these songs 10 times over. . Now we get to hear them in a new way, in very good stereo, created by true wizards with computers. Must be heard to be believed!
Note, they didn't add any echo, reverb, EQ or any nasty stuff, we all hate that. It's just nice stereo. An illusion of course, but that's what recorded stereo is, an illusion, but a convincing one. That goes for any artist but it's especially nice to hear Buddy like this, he died before stereo records were considered "normal" and it's good to hear his 30 best like this. It's fun, a bit touching, and I admit, I had a tear when I first heard PEGGY SUE. Shows off the song in a new way, all of them in a new way.
So, you don't have any Buddy Holly? Get this, you'll dig it. Take a look at the track listing at www.ericrecords.com WITH sound samples for all tracks.
See the songs? What, you youngsters didn't know that Buddy wrote PEGGY SUE/THAT'LL BE THE DAY/THINK IT OVER/MAYBE BABY/NOT FADE AWAY/RAVE ON/WELL... ALL RIGHT/EVERYDAY/CRYING, WAITING, HOPING/ITS SO EASY/LOVE'S MADE A FOOL OF YOU/WORDS OF LOVE/TRUE LOVE WAYS, etc.
What's that you say? You've only heard some of these songs by THE BEATLES/CREAM/BLIND FAITH/THE ROLLING STONES/LINDA RONSTADT/THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR, etc.? Well, all right, now is your chance to hear what the originals sound like.
I got my copy of this last week and was jazzed to blast it in my car; the kids dig Buddy and The Crickets and now we can really hear how great and underrated a drummer Jerry Allison was. He shines!
So, grab your copy, it's HIT PARADE 12331. I'll have a copy for an SH FORUMS GIVEAWAY in a few weeks. 9.-Holly-Buddy-011a-C-c-MOA-with-Ed-Sullivan-CROPPED-1200x1303.jpg Hit Parade 12331 Holly cover 550x550x72.jpg Hit Parade 12332 Garland cover 550x550x72.jpg

On to JUDY. Hit Parade called me about this title a few months ago, asked me what I thought about it. Would these old songs sound good in stereo? I told 'em to send me samples of some of their groundbreaking work on creating stereo and I would give my honest opinion. They did and I did. It's wonderful to hear her like this. Brings her back to life a bit, you know? I'm all for that.
These 26 songs start back in 1938 and go up through the 1960's. All her famous songs are here, all sound exciting and natural. Some are from actual stereo mixes, some are newly created stereo mixes by the Hit Parade computer wizards, all show off JUDY as the powerhouse talent that she was.
I've loved her since I was a little kid and saw her in "Love Finds Andy Hardy" and "The Wizard Of Oz" on TV. I asked my mom about her and my mom took pity on my little crush but had to tell me that JUDY was 45 years old at that point. Arggh! Crushed. Still, I've always loved her and this CD release honors her talent and her memory so I'm pleased to recommend it to you!
Judy Garland At 100: 26 Classics In Stereo, Hit Parade 12332. Will give one of these away in an SH FORUMS GIVEAWAY later on in the month.
It's amazing what they can do these days, DES with the Steinberg SpectralLayers Pro 7, DeMix Pro, Audioanmix TRAX Pro 3SP.
