Fuck. Hoofman's Who's Next mastering sounds like total shit. I mean it's REALLY bad! I don't understand how anyone can think it has the breath of life. I mean, he killed whatever life that master tape has with that shit mastering. I feel like I have to hear this mastering. I love that album and it would take someone special to fuck it up.

Recalling my time at SHiTEville long ago, even forum moron Dave preferred the original Polydor CeeDee over what Hooofenstein did with his MCA reissue. I figured that was pretty damning.

It's pretty common in used bins and sounds a lot like the non-Hoffman MCA, but with debatably audible digital clipping. The '95 and '03 deluxe are better. Of course, some masters are still missing from that album and a known tape thief was employed by MCA for a spell, so Who Knows?

It's really easy to find used because most people got rid of it. I love that album, too, and when the SHiTes were talking it up for so long, I had to hear Skeev's masturbation of it again. I had it originally because there was no other mastering of it at the time on CD. I got rid of it as soon as it was remastered by someone else. When I heard it again, it sucked just as much as I remembered it. It just sounds mushy and far away. It sounds like a flat transfer of a 3rd generation tape. It's wirth the $4 to find it used just so you can hear how bad it is. Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy is even worse. Hoofy's mastering of that is an absolute shit show.

A couple tracks on MBBAB are ok, some are horrendous, it's a terrible listen.

I think mine is a 97 maybe? I used to have Meaty on vinyl so that's a non starter. STEvE was at MCA in 1980, did he have a hand in Hooligans at all? I seem to recall that one sounding weak.

Oh ye of vast experience, lol. Most mastering engineers use the tools with taste and judgment and avoid dogma. Just do what’s right for the material. Many, many do what’s wrong for the material. You know this.

His MBB&B is even worse. Might as well call My Generation a remix on that one because of that random-ass bass guitar plunking bleeding through the entirety of the track.

There's only one MBBAB CD, it was left out of the mid 90's reissue campaign. Hoof didn't do Hooligans, it sounds like it was simply sequenced and bad sources were used.

No, I meant Who's Next. I've never had MBBAB on CD, but thanks for filling me in on Hooligans. It was probably a contract filler since they were going to WB anyway.

I love how these clowns believe that every compressor and limiter ever made only has two settings, "Off" and "Brickwall".

I love how these clowns believe that every compressor and limiter ever made only has two settings, "Off" and "Brickwall". It's like a bad episode of Tonto, Tarzan, & Frankenstein in a mastering studio : Tonto : "Why does Kimosabe have outboard compressors and limiters engaged?" Tarzan : "Skeeve Hoofman not use compressors or limiters. Ever." Frankenstein : "COMPRESSION BAD!!"
