McCartney/ Rubber Soul/cigarette query?
Smoking was widely accepted at that time. There were some studies that suggested it was bad for you, but a very large fraction of the population smoked.
People smoked on TV. Watch old episodes of Johnny Carson, even into the '70s.
People smoked in restaurants. People smoked in bars. Cigarettes were advertised on television until the early '70s.
No one gave a s*** that McCartney was smoking or that he was holding a cigarette on the cover.
It was a different time, a time when people were far more willing to accept differences, and accept that everyone didn't need to fall in line with however they felt.
I remember those times. I remember coming home from restaurants and bars smelling like someone else's ashtray.
Those times sucked. I'm glad they're gone.
When we'd have big family parties the smoke was like dense fog.
Funny thing though was nobody ever complained. You never heard the tired whine of how second hand smoke was killing us all.
The biggest concession to all the smoking was somebody opening a window.
