McCartney still smokes cigarettes which hasn’t helped his voice any. He can still pull off his screaming rock voice pretty well, and also his falsetto—in his midrange voice is where a bit of quavering and raspiness shows up—and yet he still can deliver good takes (ie, younger sounding) when he wants to. He just thinks his older-sounding voice suits his music better. As far as McCartney’s voice changing at around the time of Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard, you can trace his vocal “decline” (if indeed you can call it a decline) much further than that. Think Tripping the Live Fantastic.

I thought McCartney quit smoking, that was pot though they said, he still smokes ciggies, no really are you sureBilly Budapest said:
Yeah, there have been some recent photos of him smoking cigs in public. I don’t think he ever quit those. As far as weed, I have read he quit smoking that. Funny, though—health-wise, he’s got it bass ackwards.hoggy doggy said:
I think that was more of a Heather-era thing - he's been pictured having a cheeky shared toke in recent years, so Nancy is clearly more comfortable with it than his ex-wife was.theMess said:
I believe it was for legal reasons to improve his chances of getting joint custody of Beatrice.Vagabond said:
I think I read somewhere on here Paul was having a joint with Harrison Ford at some party.Ringo Hendrix said:
Is there any evidence he smokes (tobacco) cigarettes besides that one picture where he was probably just smoking a joint, which he's been seeing doing at parties openly? It's really sad if so, especially considering what happened to George. If he didn't start back after the Linda and Heather situation, I can't see why he would now. But I've only seen that one debatable piece of evidence.

the latest one was definitely a joint, not a cigarette. I think the first one was too.adm62 said:

I remember Elvis Costello saying that he smoked roll ups when they collaborated.Billy Budapest said:
Yes, there have been recent photos of McCartney smoking tobacco cigarettes.marklamb said:

^^^It still is more likely to be a joint and not a ciggie.Ringo Hendrix said:
That's what I was talking about... just the one picture, and it's probably a joint. Not super important, but the statement just made me wonder if there was substantial evidence he'd actually started again or if it was just that semi-discredited picture, out of curiosity.

Let me put this bluntly-that's not tobaccy....Vagabond said:
He really should be vaping. But what do I know, the guy is 81 years old. God bless him.Kim Olesen said:
OT: Vaping is pretty unhealthy. Newest research suggests it might be almost as dangerous as smoking. Monasmee said:

Paul was just seen at a concert smoking a joint. And the person who posted the video confirmed it was a joint. I don't think he is smoking cigarettes. I do think he's back marijuana, at least occasionally.Billy Budapest said:
Look at the pictures—there is tobacco ash at the tip of the cig. A joint doesn’t burn that way.Billy Budapest said:
The photos on the beach definitely are tobacco cigarettes. What he was smoking at the concert was probably weed or at the very least a hand rolled tobacco cigarette based on how he was holding it.Billy Budapest said:
Nope. See my comment above.Billy Budapest said:
Sure it is. Look at the ash, plus look at how he is holding it. That’s not a joint. But really, it doesn’t matter. BOTH are bad for your voice. But yeah, only one is a confirmed cause of lung cancer, throat cancer, COPD, emphysema, bladder cancer, degenerative disc disease, etc . . .
Billy Budapest said:
Well, he is smoking joints in other pictures, but what he is smoking at the beach house clearly looks like a regular tobacco cigarette.Ringo Hendrix said:
My guess is Heather didn't want him smoking it around Beatrice as some sort of parental agreement, but once she turned 18 he was able to again and so he did. The timelines check out.Drifter said:
That isn’t a ciggy - not straight-shaped. That’s a doobie, brother!Billy Budapest said:
But it IS straight shaped. Look at the ash and how Paul is holding it. That’s not a joint, it’s a regular tobacco cigarette. Anyway, this debate is silly. Neither is good for Paul’s voice and that’s the point.
