In my opinion There a 3 main styles of Rapping
--early 90s "intellectual rap"- This is a small sub genre that started around the early 90s.. where the rap is positive. its about coming together. little to no cussing. more about chilling and also a bit political as well. the 80s had some of this. probably where this style is rooted from. this style i suppose still around but in lesser numbers. I just wanted to mention this sub genre because it is slightly important.--
Style 2 - 1988-2010 Probably the longest era. "The gangster era", thug life, drugs, cuss words galore/dirty mouth lyrics. Murder threats.
Style 3 2010-current This is what I want to call "the swag era". the era we are still in. The rapping is about how swaggy you are, bragging about yourself, boasting about having money or getting girls or being a good MC. But its done in a less non threatful way compared to gangster. In a way this is sort of a return to the 80s because the rapping is slightly less dirty than the gangster era. Its less about wanting to kill people and more about trying to get ahead in life and being savvy. Sex/girls is also still a big topic in the swag era but its done in a slightly toned down way compared to the gangster style.
---I mean there are still rappers around that still make some gangster rap or a bit of a hybrid gangster/swag albums. or swag/intellectual. but in terms of main styles i think its just these 3.---
I seem to gravitate more towards the gangster. i find the dirty mouth humorous. I dont take gangster rap seriously. To me its all a facade. Thats why to me gangster rap doesnt offend me. I know the actual rappers themselves took it seriously. Thats why tupac and biggie are dead. but to me as a listener I just take it all as a big act or show....
Ive tried to get into current rap/swag rap but to me its lacking the "danger rush" of murder. I know it sounds extremely sadistic but like i said to me its all an illusion. To me if things arent taken to the upmost ridiculous extreme then it doesnt hit as hard for me.
I like quite a bit of 80s. This was a great era. To many people this is considered "the golden age" of rap. Definitely a great time. But i mentioned already what my fav style is.
I'm a white boomer, I was 16 when Rappers Delight came out and I'll bet I've heard as much rap as you have. Did I mention I was white? I am, you know, white and a boomer. Imagine that.

Style 1 - in the 1980s when rap first started. The rapping was about who had the better MC skills. Who was the best rapper. also some political stuff mixed in. about being black in america etc. also about sex/girls but not in an extreme way like it later became. Ill call it "the sucka MC era". there was also a bit of dancing aspect to this era. I think break dancing started in this era.--early 90s "intellectual rap"- This is a small sub genre that started around the early 90s.. where the rap is positive. its about coming together. little to no cussing. more about chilling and also a bit political as well. the 80s had some of this. probably where this style is rooted from. this style i suppose still around but in lesser numbers. I love it when white boomers give us their profound, urgent thoughts on hip-hoppig bodine said:
