My thoughts on various vinyl versions of STEELY DAY "AJA" for you; Cisco, ABC, AP, my CD master...Quickly, now that the broadcast is over, these are my quick thoughts on AJA vinyl. The original 1977 AB cut by Bernie sounds fine. The original 1977 AB with B scratched out and A written in sounds fine. The 1978 AA recut was NOT cut by Bernie, doesn't sound like his work to me at all. It is also fine, more subdued than the AB, more like the actual tape. Made from the ABC cutting master, I'm bettin'.. The CISCO MUSIC version is my favorite. Respecting the original mix with added sparkle. Would be my go-to version if I cared. The Analogue Productions 45 version I didn't care for. Bass was shaved a bit too much, upper mids a bit too hard and top a bit too bright. Too far from the original sound of the original mix for me. My old MCA CD version sounds accurate to the tape, but I think the vinyl versions mentioned above sound better, more neat vinyl colorations making the music flow in a good way. The magic of well-cut vinyl. As far as I understand it, all international versions (including Canadian red vinyl) were made from copies of the production master (ABC Cutting Master). Hope this helps. ON MY SYSTEM, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ANYTHING SOUNDS LIKE ON YOUR SYSTEM. ON MY SYSTEM, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ANYTHING SOUNDS LIKE ON YOUR SYSTEM. Just my opinion. Just my opinion! Just my opinion! Are the AB and AB scratched to AA you used in as good a condition as the Cisco you used in the shootout? A 47 year old opened/used LP is mint? Interesting.

STeVE badmouthed the AB pressing until the host informed him that Bernie Grundman mastered it, then it suddenly "sounds fine". What an asshole.

I have doubts a 47 year old opened LP, used as much as you said it was used, could actually be Mint. Near mint for sure, but not mint. Mine is the same vintage. Over half of the new LPs I have opened over the years are not even mint. Mine has my old girlfriend's love slobber all over side two, but side one is still mint. That counts, right?

Forgive me if this has come up before, as I never read anything related to Steely Dan or Steely Day, but is this common knowledge?
Why do people keep stealing tapes of albums Hoofy has worked on?

In his short time with MCA all kinds of tapes went missing or were actually mutilated by the Tonnmeister himself.

"Why do people keep stealing tapes of album's Hoofy has worked on?"
Sheer coincidence.

It's pretty common knowledge that Hoofy hoofed the tapes of The Dan. He'll even go far as to come out with "well, we had the master tapes when we did my CD version of Aja, and who knows what happened after we sent the tapes back to Roger Nichols [Hoofy feigns disappointed shock for effect - he's an actor, too ya know], and he demanded we send EVERYTHING back to him...no one knows what happened after we sent EVERYTHING back..." Roger Nichols (RIP) : "We did NOT get everything back."

I can't imagine a reason they'd be sent to him.

I can't imagine a reason they'd be sent to him. They weren't sent to him; he worked at MCA and MCA had everything they acquired in the ABC purchase + all the Gaucho tapes. Roger Nichols contacted MCA and asked for them to send all of the Steely Dan tapes back to the band... MCA says "absolutely, as soon as our archival team is done transferring those old useless tapes to digital, you can freaking HAVE them." so then, when Roger, Walter, and Donald received "everything"...there were *insert Gomer Pyle meme* some things missing. *surprise, surprise, surprise* I have no proof other than the timeline and MO definitely fit...

Not auctioned off. They're still in sTeev's basement next to the Pet Sounds master.
