Everyone’s favourite Byrds obsessive Johnny Rogan has died.
Probably the only thing Morrissey and David Crosby have in common is that they won’t be particularly upset at this news.

Who is Johnny Rogan? Some SHite, I presume. And with a name like that, I am sure he was some MAGAt SHite. Enjoy your meat tray, Johnny Rogan's family and friends (if he had any). He wrote books. One on The Byrds, another on The Smiths. Some others. The one on The Byrds is highly regarded, but not by the subjects. Morrissey’s choice quote is “I hope Johnny Rogan ends his days very soon in an M3 pile up.” He’s exactly the sort of person who’d be a talking head on a BBC3 program about 60s rock, or a guest writer for Mojo. Everything I’ve seen where he’s been interviewed or offered opinion indicates he was an insufferable rock bore.

But yeah - that assumption seems to fit - very Mojo mag.

Two bands I have no interest in reading about. It did occur to me recently that the Smiths would be fairly great if they would erase the vocals. It'd be like a beat combo version of the Durutti Column. They have been de-Spectorizing all sorts of shit lately, so why not de-Nazify the Smiths? I would be all over that. I wish there were some record of the Marr-Rourke band Freak Party that came before The Smiths, because that’s what they were supposed to be like. The drummer Simon Wolstencroft went on to join The Fall (musically he’s easily the most talented drummer from the glory years) and I think was in an early version of The Stone Roses.

I remember a review of his Van Morrison biography. They were surprised by the number of anti-abortion rants from the writer.

I like Wolstencroft, but he was fairly straightforward. No way was he better than Karl Burns. Or Paul Hanley. If you've read Steve Hanley's book, an amusing running joke is Wolstencroft always bemoaning the fact that he left the embryonic Smiths, then left the embryonic Stone Roses after that. He always felt he drew the short straw and had to spend 10 years of his life shooting smack and having to put up with Mark E. Smith — and then was unceremoniously edged out for good by a returning for the umpteenth time Karl Burns. When I say better, I mean technically, but of course Karl was the more clear fit for The Fall (though I have to admit my favourite Fall drummer is Keiron Melling who was in the band for its final decade). I’ve had to listen to Levitate quite a lot recently for a thing, and it’s obvious where it’s Wolstencroft drumming. It’s probably no coincidence that those are the less good songs on a fairly dull album, especially Everybody But Myself, which is supposedly the song that ended his Fall tenure once and for all.

Johnny Rogan was one of the best rock biographers ever, you assholes. If no one here have interest in Byrds or Smiths or Morrison or Ray Davies, you at least have to admire his excellent writing style and no fear to tell the less than pleasant truth about subjects of his books (sans comments from Morrisey.) He was the real writer unlike lots of those graphomaniacs who are writing 95% of rock books. And his Morrison bio have zero mentions about abortions.
