Here's where I chime in with the actual fact of never intentionally listening to one second of music by the Fall. I've nothing against them, just never gotten there.

I've got Hip Priests and Kamerads and I must have really liked the cover because I had never heard them in 1985 and I was very poor and very into The Stones back then. So I'm surprised I took a chance on it. I still have it and even bought the CD version when I found it because it had some extra songs. It's a needledrop and I think my record is cleaner than the one they had, but I have always liked that record a lot. There's so many Fall albums though. I never could figure out where I'd go from there. I swear they released a new record every few weeks for 40 years. If you're thinking about picking something to try on Spotify I can vouch for that one. You've pretty much never heard anything quite like it. I think they're like Captain Beefheart in that you'll either like it or you won't like it at all.

The complete Peel Sessions is a great Fall career sampler up to 2004, despite a few duds.

Regarding Johnny Rogan, as a Byrds fan, I hold in great esteem Timeless Flight Revisited, which was published at the same time Legacy put together the remasters and offered a ton of insight. But his target of offering multiple +1,000 page volumes covering the life and death of every band member was definitely overkill the same way many Beatles books just pile on the trivial facts without putting them into perspective.

But his target of offering multiple +1,000 page volumes covering the life and death of every band member was definitely overkill the same way many Beatles books just pile on the trivial facts without putting them into perspective. The biggest difference between Lewisohn and Rogan is that the former is obsessive with useless trivia. Rogan goes more deeper and offer psychological portrait and analysis of what was happened inside the band. His book goes up from early 60's to 2010s so it's a fair lenght. It's not like Lewisohn doing 1800+ pages on 1957-1962. Also, unlike Lewisohn, who is pathologically cannot write any criticism about his beloved Beatles and praise any piece of crap they ever released, Rogan can attack the band members with vengeance. His Van Morrison bio is very cynical. I was very impressed how he basically ended up that one (When Morrison did not showed up at funeral at his past close friend, because they had huge row, Rogan spits out venomously: "Let's see how many people will turn up at the funeral of Van The Asshole".). Rogan always had love-hate relationship with heroes of his books, so that makes it even more fascinating.

Agree, if Crosby and Morrissey didn't like what he wrote, it's probably is that he didn't pander to their own narcissism, but actually cut through and exposed it: good examples of why unoffocial biogs are usually far better than sanctioned ones.

I know we're all gonna meet our demise one day, but I'm just that much happier that I got to spend at least a few minutes in a world where Rush Limbaugh is dead.

Yeah, I was being quite reflective after my beloved husband's death from cancer, but, yeah, fuck you Rush. It couldn't have happened to a skeevier piece of shit than you. Any doubt I had about him was over when he said this shit:
Rush Limbaugh disses Diane Sawyer, Japanese recycling By Jeff Labrecque Updated March 16, 2011 at 08:10 PM EDT
Rush Limbaugh isn’t keen on recycling. In fact, the conservative radio talk show host just thinks it’s adorable that the poor folks in Japan are still making the effort after their lives were devastated by the tsunami last week. On yesterday’s show, he ridiculed ABC World News’ Diane Sawyer, who took special notice of the recycling efforts at one of the refugee camps in Japan. A like-minded caller sarcastically asked why Gaia (Greek for Mother Earth) would so cruelly punish a people responsible for the environmentally-conscious Prius and a dynamic public transportation system, and who take recycling seriously. Limbaugh agreed, going on to say:
“The Japanese have done so much to save the planet. He’s right. They’ve given us the Prius. Even now, refugees are still recycling their garbage, and yet Gaia levels them [laughs], just wipes them out. Wipes out their nuclear plants, all kinds of radiation. What kind of payback is this? That is an excellent question. They invented the Prius. In fact, where Gaia blew up is right where they make all these electric cars. That’s where the tsunami hit. All those brand-new electric cars sitting there on the lot. I like the way this guy was thinking. It’s like — it’s like Gaia hit the Prius in [inaudible]. It’s like they were in the crosshairs, if we can use that word, it does. What is Gaia trying to tell us here? What is the mother of environmentalism trying to say with this hit? Great observation out there, Chris.”
