One of the most stupid campaigns in recent years was the outrage at the Kimmy Schmidt actress, Ellie Kemper. She comes from a family of bankers from St. Louis and she was crowned at 19 queen of some debutante ball. She never bragged about it, and it’s likely that the family connections got her noticed there, but three years ago it was (gasp!) revealed that the Southern society responsible for the ball had a history of racism. Some idiots on the left quickly piled on the indignation and explained basically that it was as bad as if she had owned slaves, while in real life Kemper interned on Conan and married one of the Jewish writers who worked on Nathan for You and is a frequent Robert Smigel collaborator for Triumph, not to mention that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt had Titus Andromedon as her gay and Black best friend. And of course she hadn’t done a curriculum on the background of the society. She managed to put together a classy explanation that caused the controversy to die down. But it took a few days and in the meantime, progressive websites put together a few think pieces on how bad it was and that her silence was an admission of guilt. As usual, a small bunch of loudmouths on Twitter were quoted ad nauseam as representative of the vox populi while they were rivaling for attention and mostly tried to outdo everyone else. www.cbsnews.com/news/ellie-kemper-apology-veiled-prophet-ball/

She was the swimmer who goes skinny-dipping in the first scene. She gave a bunch of boomers their first boner in a movie theater. That's more than enough to qualify. It's pretty predictable. That's a common strategy from right wingers to focus on beloved non-conformist figures and connect them with CP or child molestation. "You know, the producer you revere and who said those challenging things I'm not able to refute about how crooked the record industry is? Turns out that he was friends with noted child pornographers and that he was a piece of shit." They did almost the same thing to James Gunn, Dan Harmon or Patton Oswalt a few years ago. Focus about a few extremely regrettable things from their past, take the entire context out (for instance, for Oswalt, they simply quoted isolated tweets that looked like an horrible statement, while it was just the first part of a two-parter), and ask for cancellation. If they succeed to cancel the target (as it happened briefly with James Gunn), they will say that there are many more people like that in "Hollyweird" and that the swamp must be drained. If they fail, that's because you're an hypocrite and you're doing nothing to protect children. The indignation has always been very selective. You can notice for instance that the Epstein speculation is huge on Bill Clinton, while there are at least as many photographs or reports that connect Epstein with Trump. But for Trump it would be TDS, witch hunt, etc. Is it just right wingers though? A lot of this cancelling stuff seems to be coming from faux outraged idiots with mob mentality regardless of poltical leaning. Self-described 'liberals' can be as bad if not worse. It is like there are whole swathes of society with absolutely no sense of historical context or critical thinking, but have somehow got themselves into a position of influence, or at least some social media soapbox. All the 'creatives' who signed the letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer for his remarks at the Oscars about Gaza - I bet most of them identify as 'liberals'. it's a shame the phrase 'virtue signalling' has been ascribed to the right, because it really does sum up a hell of a lot of behaviour in the current age, including in working hours. I don't think it's equivalent, though the developments with Palestine have definitely had some liberals conflating any protest of the military action with anti-Semitism. But even a case like Glazer gets glommed onto by the right as illustrating Hollywood's general depravity.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively actually apologized for holding their wedding at a former plantation. I'm sitting in a house that most likely was once on Native American land. I suppose I should look for someone to apologize to. Al Franken left the Senate, for something that should have been strictly between him, his wife, and actress Leeann Tweeden, who accepted his apology. There were some other sketchy accusations, none of which amounted to much. Still, he was drummed out, while Matt Gaetz is in his third term in the House. The assholes double down and maintain power, while reasonable people bend over backwards to do the right thing, and end up on the sidelines. QAnon and the far right think about kids entirely too much. Especially the ones not yet born, who are the most sacred of all.

The thing is that, despite years of claiming that they must protect them, they haven't saved any single kid so far, and making random accusations never helps. A theory is that it's ultimately all about preserving social order. For instance, when women then gays got equal rights, for many fear mongers, these were steps towards the destruction of the very fabric of society, and then next one would be enabling child molestation. Of course, it's all connected to the Jews, who want to destroy traditional values, which also explains the emphasis on "Hollyweird". That's what already happened a century ago, when religious leagues would regularly attack the film industry as corrupt and intending to destroy Christian values. The bottom of the issue is that they thought that Jews had too much power, and they wanted to put pressure on the industry, which ultimately resulted in the Production Code getting mandatory (as they got the banks that worked with the studios to only finance movies that would respect the Code). Bottom line, if we get free thinkers such as Albini who challenge traditional values, the whole society is supposed to be doomed. www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/07/why-are-right-wing-conspiracies-so-obsessed-with-pedophilia/ips-dc.org/the-global-right-wings-bizarre-obsession-with-pedophilia/

I'm a great fan of Roger Corman (esp through the 70s) and am not one to shake and cry over a 98-year-old. I'm more distressed to find that basically all the worst SHites (Jedi, Brad Olson, Ghostworld, Lightworker) are aficionados as well. I'll comfort myself knowing they all (except maybe Brad) no doubt chose Galaxy of Terror for their mourn-watch over The Intruder or The Trip.

Frank Ifield, RIPThe only knowledge I had of him was the VJ album. Jolly What! Englands Greatest Recording Stars: The Beatles & Frank Ifield On Stage I’m actually surprised I’ve never done any digging to find out who he was or listened to any of his records. I guess he's never gonna finish that long rumored reunion album with The Beatles. RIP RIP. I bought this album in 1964!
