An Ontario woman is looking for an apology from the Georgia police officer who arrested, handcuffed and charged her because she was driving with a Canadian licence.
...
There are still sometimes examples of overly zealous police enforcement of laws, or what the constabulary thinks is "law", going on. Anyone care to supply some? Hopefully, you won't be offering a firsthand experience.
What possible defence could the officer supply for this? I can't think of one.
Sadly, it appears that possession ingnorance is still nine-tenths of the law.

a month after 9/11, My wife is leaving her car and keys (in a slot). I'm sitting in my car shining the headlights on her so she can see where the slot is to drop the keys.
Cop pulls up: 'Excuse me sir, do you mind telling me what you're doing tonight?'
"Shining my lights so my wife can see the drop off slot."
He looks over for the first time..... "oh, um, have a good night.'
He must've thought he was going to catch a terrorist prepping a bomb at a car repair place.

I'm just thankful that I didn't get arrested, handcuffed and charged for driving in Canada with an Oklahoma license.
Thank you Canada!

One Barney Fife-type incident is nothing to draw conclusions about intelligent law enforcement (except regarding that individual officer).

Bur remember it was a phone person in Atlanta, GA who insisted that a caller from New Mexico had to get in contact with their embassy to get tickets to the Olympics since they were foreigners. :nyah:

I was in Ottawa last summer when a policeman pulled me over. I had made a left turn where a no left turn sign was posted. We were using a Tom Tom GPS and it told us to make the left turn. We didn't see the sign, but it was there. He looked at my Virginia license, stepped to his car and ran the license, than came back and told me they don't ticket tourists and to please drive carefully and please follow their laws.

Booked a vacation to see New York City 8 years ago. Apparently you can't cross into the US if you have a criminal record despite it being one thing nearly 20 years ago. So they made us wait for hours, wouldn't let anyone use the washroom, fingerprinted me and told me if I were to ever come back I'd be arrested. This was for something stupid I did when i was 18! I couldn't believe it. We lost the money we paid for the hotels and other things we'd booked and the wife was crying. Thanks America. I was only going to spend a few thousand seeing your country.

If you Canadians would start driving with licenses maybe this wouldn't happen

That cuts both ways, of course (EDIT: I see this was already noted!). My American bro in law was banned from Canada for similar youthful stupidity and spent some time and $ to have his record expunged.
So all you cons out there, before making any down payments on travel remember to check out the immigration/entry laws of they countries you're travelling to...

In another lifetime I used to drive all over the US and had been pulled over a few times when working. All officers were polite and to the point saying just checking because of your Canadian plates. Ok, no problem as I had a green card.
Only once on vacation in San Diego did I have a little bit of a scare. This officer, the size of a small apartment building asked me to step out of the car, and I was guilty of speeding a bit to keep up with the locals and not cause a back up. So I get out looking behind and can plainly see he's not in his car and I'm thinking "where the hell did he go?" I look to the curbside and he's at least 25 feet from me with his hand on his pistol and asking me for my ID. :bigeek: My hands automatically extend out to my sides so he can plainly see them and as I start to reach around back for my wallet I say "I'm just going for my wallet." Scared the living crap out of me never encountering this behavior before! I told him "I'm leaving tomorrow morning on a flight and the car belongs to the lady in the passenger seat." He replies "can the lady confirm this?" I respond " yes, please feel free to ask her." He does and gives me the finger wag and says "slow down a bit and have a nice flight home." Phew! :sweating:

true enough. I crossed the border a bunch of times before this but that was before 911 and they would just wave people through without checking anything.
