"NO, NO NOT ME!"Is Peter's screaming of "No, no not me!" during the chorus of the Monkees' "Steppin' Stone" not one of thee greatest fleeting, intense moments of rock 'n' roll? Yes. But I believe it's Tommy Boyce rather than Peter. Great thread title. It's super informative. Thought Bowie was singing that in Man Who Sold the World?? Tommy Boyce sang backup vocals on ‘Steppin’ Stone’. The extra chorus can be heard in the stereo version but not the Mono version. It's not even the greatest fleeting, intense moment in the actual song. The other "no's" are more intense. I always thought that was Mickey. Oh no, no not me! We never lost control! You're face to face With the man who sold the world! Doesn't sound like Peter to me. I used to think it was Peter Tork, but the liner notes of ‘More Of The Monkees’ say that Tommy Boyce sang background vocals on the song. Was Peter involved at all on this song?

I'll wait for an answer from a Peter Tork scholar.

According to Wiki, Dolenz is the only Monkee on the recording.
"Musicians featured on the Monkees recording are: Micky Dolenz (lead vocal); Tommy Boyce (backing vocal); Wayne Erwin, Gerry McGee, and Louie Shelton (guitar); Bobby Hart (organ); Larry Taylor (bass); Billy Lewis (drums); and Henry Lewy (percussion)."
So it's not even the Monkees, never mind one of the greatest fleeting blah blah blah....

Isn't it "NO GIRL NOT ME"? I had no idea what the SHites were talking about until I saw this comment. Of course it's "no girl, not me". (The fact not one of the many so-called "Monkee scholars" over there corrected the OP speaks volumes.) And FWIW, "Steppin' Stone" was once released by Rhino in a vocals-only mix, so the goombas really have no excuse for getting that one wrong... (The hard G at the beginning of "girl" is completely obvious.)

I know cuz when my high school friends and I had our “fake band” called Black Plasma we did a parody called I’m Not Your Broken Bone and I did the “NO GIRL NOT ME” part. 😃

While I enjoy poking fun at the Monkees, Mickey Dolenz had a great fucking voice.

So intense. That was The Monkees' Sister Ray, man. Just...just beyond everything. You know?

I always thought it was interesting how these entertainment-industry craftsmen did come out with this one admitted proto-punk classic -- first I knew it was the Sex Pistols version which still fits in with the other covers they did. Of course a SHite can still blow it out of all proportion. Still the only Monkees song I have any time for, though. <SHite off>
