The necrophilia, pedophilia, and Fab Four circle jerks are one thing, but this is some next level creepiness:
How Does Your Dog Respond to Verbal Praise/Affection?
I think Oatsdead is just buh hurt that Mitzi won't squirt for him!
How Does Your Dog Respond to Verbal Praise/Affection?
I have 2 dogs, and my poodle Mitzi loves any form of attention. When I tell her she's a good girl and that I love her, she gets very excited, even if I don't pet her at the same time.
My Yorkie poodle Putty, though, only cares about physical affection. I can praise her all day long and she'll seem unaffected.
She's exceptionally affectionate - she gives me kisses all the time - and she loves physical affection, but verbal comments do nothing for her.
Curious to hear others' experiences in this realm!

"Not lovable" dogs need homes, too, so it's great you gave the pooch a place to reside! :righton:
Before I took her in 5 years ago, my Mitzi had been a "breeder" at a puppy mill, so she'd never experienced any kind of love or positive attention. She was completely broken emotionally when I got her - as aloof as aloof could be.
Happily, she's warmed up massively over the years. She's still largely standoffish toward others, but I know she loves me, and she adores the attention she receives.
If Mitzi had never changed emotionally, I still would've been happy to give her a home, but I've felt extremely gratified to see how much she's developed. She's just the sweetest thing you could meet!

I agree that there's no such thing as too much praise for dogs. As you allude, a child who receives nothing but praise will probably end up pretty entitled and spoiled, but dogs don't follow the same rules.
I try to focus on the positive, but there are some times that isn't possible. For instance, Mitzi licks obsessively. I suspect this is a throwback to her "bad old days" at the puppy mill - she probably did it as self-stimulation since no one else ever interacted with her - but it still drives me nuts.
I can't really praise her for not licking, as she'll never connect the 2. All I can do is discourage the licking and hope it fades at some point! :help:
