Yet he proposes an even more "Americanised" version of Red album.

I bought the Beatles Mono Masters double CD a few months ago. I was pleasantly surprised that the 4 new Yellow Submarine soundtrack songs were included. This got me to wonder why they weren't included on the regular Past Masters CD as well, as that would have made a lot more sense. Also, I like the idea of the Magical Mystery Tour tracks appearing on Past Masters as well, after all Magical Mystery Tour wasn't a British LP back in the 1960s. I remember J.P. Russell pointed out how Past Masters skips over 1967 entirely. I shifted the Magical Mystery Tour tracks over to the stereo Past Masters. I also put the 4 new Yellow Submarine tracks on Stereo Past Masters as well. Meanwhile I deleted the 3 "Let it Be" tracks from the album. In fact, I restructured Let it Be...Naked to be Let it Be. Let it Be is missing a "Ringo songs." "If You've Got Trouble" could have gone in there. Really, I think that should have been on Help! Actually I once replaced "Act Naturally" with it. Love Me Do should also be removed and put on Anthology One instead. I'm thinking perhaps the Yellow Submarine tracks don't belong because that was a real UK LP. There's no point to a series of albums that exist to fulfill a set criteria, if you're then going to make ad hoc exceptions to override that criteria. You may have had a point before the release of the Beatles Anthology, but you don't now. The German language songs should be on Anthology One as well. The stereo Past Masters set should have the version of She Loves You recorded at the Hollywood Bowl. The mono mixes of all of the albums (including Past Masters) should be readily available to buy one at a time.

I have German in-laws. They bought Past Masters volume 1 solely for the German language tracks.

A lot of older Germans first heard the Beatles via those two German language tunes. I guess those were played on radio the most at the time. I surmise that Voice of America must have played those a lot as well, because I have known many Eastern Europeans and people from the Soviet Union who said that the German language versions were the first Beatles songs they ever heard. That said, those translations are god awful, as bad as the most banal Schlager. You would think that Brian Epstein would have hired a better translator. Or, more likely, it was someone on the Electrola payroll who was assigned the task. "Camillo Jean Nicolas Felgen (17 November 1920 – 16 July 2005) was a Luxembourgish singer, lyricist, disc jockey, and television presenter, who represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 1960 and in 1962."
"In 1964, as Jean Nicolas, Felgen also translated the only two songs recorded by The Beatles in German: "Komm, gib mir deine Hand" ("I Want to Hold Your Hand") and "Sie liebt dich" ("She Loves You"). Felgen, then working as a programme director at Radio Luxembourg, was given just 24 hours to finalize the translated lyrics, fly to Paris, and coach the band on German phonetics.[2]"

I think the Streaming Era gives another chance/reason for Apple to rebrand "Past Masters." It's not a great title. Doesn't mean anything to anyone who doesn't have working knowledge of what a "master" recording even is. "Past Masters" just sounds old and weirdly arrogant as a title. It doesn't need to be completely overhauled, but PM should get a fresh name and album art at the least. Maybe adjust the tracklist slightly as well. Make it clear that these are all the non-album tracks...Off The Record: Singles & Rarities? Drop the German tracks (can't those just exist as curios instead of official songs in the middle of an English tracklist?) in favor of a couple of other rarities or unique mixes, etc. Christmastime is Here Again is a studio recorded b-side (free as a bird) and it's never been on an LP. It could fit in in the empty '67 era slot...as could the film version of the MMT title track with the voice overs and alternate mix, why not include those two instead of the German songs? I would have preferred the 2 comps be organized roughly along the following lines 1. Essential Non-LP Tunes From Me To You Thank You Girl She Loves You I'll Get You I Want To Hold Your Hand This Boy I Feel Fine She's A Woman Yes It Is I'm Down Day Tripper We Can Work It Out Paperback Writer Rain Lady Madonna Hey Jude Revolution Don't Let Me Down Ballad Of John & Yoko 2. More Non-LP tunes (The rest)

Combine it with Anthology and call it Frankenmasters Vol.1 and 2.

My takeaway from this is that rfreeman hates George Harrison and also hates comedy songs (which is why he’s left off You Know My Name).
Oh, the irony.

I think a 2 cd/3(?) disc vinyl complete U.K. singles A/B sides collection is long overdue at some point and would replace Past Masters and could potentially be a perennial catalog seller. Of course you would be missing the German tracks as well as stuff like the wwf Across the Universe but that stuff belonged on something like Anthology anyway. Yes, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. An album of all the U.K. singles only, which means the German tracks and ATU wouldn’t be included since they were not originally U.K. singles, and instead of being a niche item for collectors, it’s a mainstream release ala 1. And if anyone wonders why anyone would buy the same exact songs again, well that’s exactly what they thought when 1 was released and that did ok. Other then the big boxes they will eventually turn to new ways to sell the core catalog, so I don’t think this is too far out of the realm of possibility

In all seriousness though... is there a single reason we shouldn't arbitrarily fuck up the cleanest and easiest British Invasion discography to collect in full?

Consider this as an alternative -- The Magical Mystery U.S. album was not released in 1987 as part of the canon catalog. Instead, all singles and EPs were compiled into logical collections of the original releases. So, no "Past Masters" either, with all its inherent drawbacks. In its place we have "The Beatles Singles (Vol 1, Vol 2)" and "The Beatles EPs (Vol 1, Vol 2)." I think this would address some of the criticisms of the Past Masters sets, especially Vol. 2. Personally, I wouldn't mind purchasing the duplication of tracks and would enjoy hearing the singles and EPs flow in chronological order. Singles (Vol 1): - Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You
- Please Please Me/Ask Me Why
- From Me To You/Thank You Girl
- She Loves You/I'll Get You
- I Want To Hold Your Hand/This Boy
- Can't Buy Me Love/You Can't Do That
- A Hard Day's Night/Things We Said Today
- I Feel Fine/She's A Woman
- Ticket To Ride/Yes It Is
- Help!/I'm Down
- Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out
Singles (Vol 2): - Paperback Writer/Rain
- Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine
- Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane
- All You Need Is Love/Baby You're A Rich Man
- Hello, Goodbye/I Am The Walrus
- Lady Madonna/The Inner Light
- Hey Jude/Revolution
- Get Back/Don't Let Me Down
- The Ballad Of John & Yoko/Old Brown Shoe
- Something/Come Together
- Let It Be/You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
EPs (Vol 1): - Twist & Shout - Twist & Shout/A Taste Of Honey/Do You Want To Know A Secret/There's A Place
- The Beatles' Hits - From Me To You/Thank You Girl/Please Please Me/Love Me Do
- No. 1 - I Saw Her Standing There/Misery/Anna (Go To Him)/Chains
- All My Loving - All My Loving/Ask Me Why/Money (That's What I Want)/P.S. I Love You
- Long Tall Sally - Long Tall Sally/I Call Your Name/Slow Down/Matchbox
- Extracts From AHDN - I Should Have Known Better/If I Fell/Tell Me Why/And I Love Her
- Extracts From AHDN - Any Time At All/I'll Cry Instead/Things We Said Today/When I Get Home
EPs (Vol 2): - Beatles For Sale - No Reply/I'm A Loser/Rock And Roll Music/Eight Days A Week
- Beatles For Sale 2 - I'll Follow The Sun/Baby's In Black/Words Of Love/I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
- Million Sellers - She Loves You/I Want To Hold Your Hand/Can't Buy Me Love/I Feel Fine
- Yesterday - Yesterday/Act Naturally/You Like Me Too Much/It's Only Love
- Nowhere Man - Nowhere Man/Drive My Car/Michelle/You Won't See Me
- Magical Mystery Tour - Magical Mystery Tour/Your Mother Should Know/I Am The Walrus/Fool On The Hill/Flying/Blue Jay Way

Years ago I grabbed a Japanese (unofficial of course) 4CD set of the US singles. That's all I will ever need of Our Boys, Our Rock 'n' Roll Boys.

Past Masters-like compilation if a Beatles singles collection had been releasedWe all know that back in 1988 Past Masters was a functional and pragmatic way to complete the Beatles discography with no repetition of tracks. However, a potential alternative could have been a double-CD singles collection featuring all UK A-sides and B-sides (including the original mono mixes), as it was a common practice for other '60s artists. This was actually done shortly after but in form of 22 CDs, only aimed for dedicated collectors. Now if an A's & B's compilation had been released instead of Past Masters, there still would have been some "orphan" officially released songs that would have required a new destiny. Perhaps this could also have been an excuse to give a different place to the four "new" songs from the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. Thus, this would be the list of remaining tracks to create a new compilation, probably named as The Rest of the Beatles: 1. Love Me Do (original single version with Ringo on drums, assuming that the standard Andy White version would have been used for the singles collection, as they did with the 22 CDs set). 2. Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand 3. Sie Liebt Dich 4. Long Tall Sally 5. I Call Your Name 6. Slow Down 7. Matchbox 8. Bad Boy 9. Only A Northern Song 10. All Together Now 11. Hey Bulldog 12. It's All Too Much 13. Across The Universe (WWF version) With a running time of almost 38 min, its length would have been similar to several actual Beatles albums. Yet there's plenty of space in a CD to include additional recordings, such as the following outtakes: 14. How Do You Do It 15. Leave My Kitten Alone 16. If You've Got Trouble 17. That Means A Lot 18. 12-Bar Original 19. Not Guilty 20. What's The New Mary Jane 21. Come And Get It This would bring the running time to about 63 min. Now the point of this thread is not to discuss whether a singles collection should have been released or not instead of Past Masters, but to suggest what should have been done with those remaining tracks if a Beatles singles collection had been a real thing. I read you.
