Relaxin, Cookin. Workin, and a Steamin, all done by RVG. Iconic sessions, still sound good today.

And all original creations. Meanwhile I am waiting to hear about something original that STeVe worked on, much less something as iconic as those Davis sessions.

There was the Cha Cha CD he worked on.

There was the Cha Cha CD he worked on. Wasn’t that merely vaporware?

It never released, I just now realized it may have been merely a fever dream of his.

Have you all forgotten that STeVE did the mastering on Antonio Lysy at The Broad: Music from Argentina, at Yarlung Records, which went on winning a Latin GRAMMY in 2011 (for Lalo Schiffrin, who had provided Best Classical Contemporary Composition "Pampas" on the album)?
How many competitive Grammy Awards has Rudy Van Gelder been attached to lately?

He also did that live Sinatra bootleg from a TDK D90, complete with sharp fade when side 1 ran out. How on earth could Rudy van Gelder hope to compete with that?

Am I off-base in thinking everything from Audio Fidelity is junk?

Am I off-base in thinking everything from Audio Fidelity is junk? No, even the SHites know that Audio Fidelity is junk. Mediocre mastering and boring album selections that nobody cares about no more. Styx & Asia? Only idiots or fan boys would buy those at a premium price. And there are others. Not to mention that every other one released had manufacturing errors or incompetent mastering errors.

Unless you are talking about the god awful "remasters" of those done by Steve Hoffman. Those sound like complete garbage. It's true. My dad had the Hoffman remaster of Relaxin' (for the music rather than the remastering.) It's a mono tape played back on a stereo deck with an azimuth offset which makes Davis' trumpet sound as if it's occasionally moving around, and turned the high end all squishy if summed. There was also quite a lot of dropout in one channel, which suggests they used a subpar tape. You know, all the problems Hoffman frequently slammed the original mono Beatles CDs for having. As a sales pitch for Hoffman, it failed. Still, dad was pleased when I told him he could sell it for more than he paid, and pick up a proper remaster for a fraction of the profit.

The irony is my dad fell for the "original master tape" schtick, and ended up asking if they'd been stored in a toilet.

Was it difficult explaining to your father why the shitty STeVE version was worth more? We put it down to "collectors' value." He did look at the Audio Fidelity website once and declared that every title in their catalogue a pile of shit nobody in their right mind would want to buy.

Plus some of the errors were not corrected or needed more than one try to get things done “right ”. Is it any wonder the PO Box had to close up.
