From Mr. Wall himself:
Oh c'mon, F.S. Let's look at that fairy tale from a realistic perspective:
1) if - a big IF - Hoofbag actually had the master, he didn't receive it in that condition. He probably fucked it up himself rewinding or something. I say he had some sort of copy. And what's with that "we waited seven years" horseshit anyway?
2) he claims to have spliced out the damaged section, then edited in the section from a stock Cee Dee. Then EQed or whatever the fuck he supposedly did to match it. Perfectly. It's undetectable. Right.
3) he claims that when he was done, he removed the "fixed" part and re-spliced in the damaged section. Aqualung has been reissued a number of times since and no one has mentioned any kind of damage. Steven Wilson remixed, so obviously he went back to the multitracks. But he also did a flat transfer. Did Wilson have to splice in anything? Did anyone subsequently at EMI for other reissues? I don't believe it for a minute.
4) Anderson seems to be a pretty sharp guy. By all accounts he didn't do much in the way of alcohol/drugs during his career. I seriously doubt he's going to mail out the original Aqualung to some company he's never heard of (on the other hand, Mobile Fidelity has been reputable since the 70s).
5) all else being equal, Hooofstein was, is and will always be a despicable, low-lifed liar and general piece of shit. Why would we believe him in this case? Answer: we don't.

I thank you, sir. I could not be bothered to dig all that shit out again. But I will stand tall. Again, thank you Mr. G.D.

Oh, and STEVE? Listen, Steve-a-rino. If you'd like to join up here and discuss this with us, you are cordially invited. I will gladly be proved wrong and you could set the record straight. Maybe poat a pic of that Tull tape box taken with the Leica? Just sayin'. I am willing to listen.

You are welcome!
I think my takeaway from this is, on one hand, he claims to have waited seven years for a master tape (though probably not the actual master). But in other stories, he starts on the project, remasturbating either select tracks or an entire album when suddenly the whole thing goes POOF!
StEvE's never had a reputation for being honest and truthful. I believe someone here said that if STEVe said the sun would rise in the east tomorrow, I'd get a second opinion.
Lastly, Ian Anderson is known to be a control freak. Few (if any) things get done with Tull without his involvement. So yes, at best, Hoofy had a safety copy or a generational dub. No way Ian Anderson, anal retentive he is, is gonna send out the original master tape of Aqualung to some shyster he doesn't know, and if he asked around, doesn't have the trustable reputation.

That is very interesting. I know this is getting off topic here, but do you have any idea what the technical reason is that CD players and computers are able to cope with those clicks but DAT cannot? Best guess is that DAT machines, despite the hype, didn't have as sophisticated smoothing circuits and error correction as CD players do. You simply weren't meant to record that hot. Run out of bits? Have a fucking splat for your trouble. Bear in mind broadcast DATs were usually recorded to peak at either -12dB or even -18dB, in order to allow for momentary "overs."

There's a curious anomaly on the DCC Pet Sounds. There are clicks on the master tape of Let's Go Away For Awhile which, on Steve's version, exceed digital zero. CD players and computer ripping can cope with this, but copying it digitally to DAT about 20 years ago, we found that those clicks turned into almighty fucking splats on the DAT. Bear in mind this was in a radio studio on broadcast spec gear, and we tried it on more than one set of machines and DAT tapes. It's the only disc I've ever known that couldn't be copied to DAT. Yeah didn’t The Beach Boys or their people issue a statement about SH’s Pet Sounds or am I imagining that? Nearest I can think of was Mark Linett saying that Brian Wilson didn't like the bass Steve denies jacking up. It didn't prevent Hoffman redoing it a few years later (known as "the dropout-riddled version.")

STeVE once told a story about how the mastertape of the Doors' Love Me Two Times was cut to make the single edit and then reassembled which sounds pretty unlikely.

None are plausible. But also none are interesting. If you're gonna make shit up, at least make it worth reading.

STeVE tells a lot of stories. I wonder if he has ever told one that sounds even remotely plausible. “This project was cancelled.”

One of the last and one of the biggest lies about Audio Fidelity. Clever Daddy. Keeping the goobs occupied and from asking questions with some horseshit "special project" while Marsha quietly dismantles the PO box in the background. Smoke and mirrors.

I give it a week after Anderson dies that STEvE will be telling his cross burning flock that Ian Anderson personally handed Hoofy the priceless Aqualung master tape over cheese omelets at Jerry's Deli.

I seriously doubt he's going to mail out the original Aqualung to some company he's never heard of (on the other hand, Mobile Fidelity has been reputable since the 70s). Look, pal, I am 99% sure that Paul McCartney personally vouched for STeVe, telling Ian all about how absolutely bitchen and righteous it was to hang out at Hoffman's house and having the privilege of being able to listen to STeVe's work on STeVe's personal breath-o-life W-I-D-E S-T-E-R-E-O rig. That doesn't sound like something Sir Macca would think, or even say.

I don't believe him, it's a work of fabricated bullshit, but it's decent fiction. Lots of detailed imagery. Decent fiction.
