An acquaintance of mine was a VP at Capitol / EMI who coordinated (and sometimes conceptualized) all Beatles releases in the 90's - early 00's. Having to get all three + Yoko to approve a project could be a daunting task but he said Harrison was by far the easiest going and coolest of the bunch. I happened to be at a party with said executive on the night that George died... we walked out onto the backyard and lifted our champagne-filled glasses to the sky, while our guitars gently weeped.

I did always have Chappie day off in high school. Granted, it's also the immaculate conception, but I spent the day with my friend in Strawberry Fields a few years in a row.

When George Harrison died, a friend and I saw the rows of All Things Must Pass CDs lining the hastily assembled display racks at Tower Records and HMV. To this day, we still joke about the record company guy calling his wife -“Darling, go ahead and order that second extension on the house and pack your skis for the slopes…yeah, it happened! He died!…yeah, another million units easily…We’re gonna be even richer!”
Thanks John Lennonist for finally putting a face to this scenario.

I'd be interested to hear more about this fictional acquaintance. All Apple product has been strictly in-house since 1992. Capitol/EMI have been responsible for manufacturing and distribution (which requires a fair amount of coordination), but not for coming up with initial concepts. George probably was easy-going in his limited contact with a Capitol bod. Most of his ire was directed at McCartney.

You know what would be good? A nice 2 CD set with the best of all the solo stuff. No one has done that. That was proposed to the group by my friend, formerly a high-ranking Capitol representative who was the liaison with the Beatles (and estates) on all of their annual (usually for the Christmas gift-giving season) projects . Note: he didn't tell me it would be two CDs. He made it sound like a double LP (one side for each member's selected solo stuff -- whether that would have come out as one CD or two I don't know). But at least one of the group -- Paul, Ringo, Yoko or George (this proposal was when George was still alive) -- nixed it. If not unanimous, projects are a no-go in Beatle world. [Side Note -- he said that George was, by far, the coolest and most easy-going member of the band to deal with. And it just so happened that he and I were at a party on the night that George died. We filled glasses with champagne, walked out on the lawn, and lifted our glasses toward the stars in honor and appreciation of his departed friend and of my second-favorite Beatle]

I have zero memories whatsoever of the day George Harrison died. Twenty years later, what stands out most about George's passing was how it managed to put 9/11 and 9/11 related stories below the fold for a day or three...

This guy was the imbecile who earnestly put forth The Ventures and Dick Dale as examples of post-rock.

Is that the same guy who argued for 20 or so pages that early Genesis was "math rock"? I think early Genesis is too recent for him.
