So has anyone that wanted to listen to the Stones in the past few months reached for Hackney Diamonds rather than one of their good classic albums? I enjoyed it but it’s taken off my Apple Music and I’ve had no desire to revisit it.

Same here. Although I admit, I have a soft spot for Steel Wheels as well. Fond memories of The Stones at Foxboro Stadium and Olympic Stadium in Montreal circa 1989. Steel Wheels came out at an important time of my life, so I also have nice memories of its era. Although, I think the album suffers a bit from “CD bloat” (as do all R.S. albums of the CD era, in varying degrees). (Actually, the reason I don’t listen to Steel Wheels more now might be due to how strongly it evokes memories of late 1989. All of the feelings the album dredges up tend to overshadow the music for me.)

I feel the same way about Funkytown.

I'd say Voodoo Lounge is slightly better, as it sounds a little more organic, while Steel Wheels sound more manufactured, to provide the illusion that Mick and Keith had really patched things up and were working together again. That said I don't mind any of the post Dirty Work albums (except maybe for Bridges to Babylon). They're mostly an excuse to have a couple of new songs to play on a tour, and nobody expects a late-career renaissance like Dylan, Bowie or Johnny Cash had.

I finally came around to appreciate Blue and Lonesome recently. It's a gently and lovingly polished up jam session. Would have paired well with an album of originals had they been able to pull it together at the time.
Steel Wheels is incredible just for the turn around time. They reunite in January after almost 3 years apart and by August they have a record out.
