David Lander (Squiggy) RIPSo they're down to Shirley, Carmine, Lenny and Rhonda now. Is this a countdown that we should be aware of? America loves a good Deathwatch The weird thing is, I just watched "The Man With One Red Shoe" (that he has a small part in) just a few days ago! You saw an actor in a movie? FUCKING SPOOKY.

RIP Brad's least favorite country singer. Covidiot pleads for Covid-19's innocence. Chest Pains Productions: I should have saved a screen-print because even Mikaela had a row with him. One of the gorfs zapped the whole conversation

I doubt John Le Carre will make much of a ripple there but, RIP. Great writer.

Man, I loved LeCarre when I was a teenager. I always loved spy books and his were just so much more likely to me. I won’t pretend to think that I didn’t know he had been for at least 20 years, but I read a lot of his books a long time ago.

He was still writing up til recently (I think his last one was last year), although not as high profile as he was. He still had it; his later stuff is pretty good.

If you haven't already, definitely check out the BBC's adaptations of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and 'Smiley's People'. Both are superb mini-series; the latter recently got its soundtrack released digitally almost 40 years after it first appeared on vinyl:

The recent miniseries based on The Night Manager, starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki and Olivia Colman is also very good. I haven't gone so far much further than the Smiley trilogy, but he was definitely a great writer who could rivet you with the minutiae of a terse office by investing every undertone with some sinister purpose, or paranoid interpretation.

In a moment of STeVE-esque bragging, my brother used to date the lady who plays the PA in The Night Manager.

I've already pitched you all this show in the TV/movies thread, but anyone into le Carré should check out The Sandbaggers, a low-budget spy drama made in the late 70s/early 80s:
The writer, Ian Mackintosh, had a background in naval intelligence and was likely an officer in MI6 in the '60s. The show was ultimately cut short after 3 seasons when Mackintosh's plane went missing in Canada, never to be seen again... (!!)
The show is available on Daily Motion in decent quality. The lead character, Neil Burnside, is perhaps my favourite antihero of any TV show or movie:
