So far it's basically a bunch of pictures of dudes that grew/shaved off beards and changed their hairstyles. Oh, and John Lennon started wearing those glasses.
I'm sure as soon as someone starts focusing on women that there will be plenty of fodder for the misogyny thread.

Over there I’m not sure many believe that wimen-folk are capable of making music so we might not see anything on this in that thread.

His head will explode soon.

Someone suggests in the neverending RRHOF thread that for every new artist added, one gets removed.
Oatsdad responds
He would certainly be one of the first 20 ejected if this became a policy.

I would try to see all the Best Picture nominees, but since I don't do streaming, that's become impossible. Only saw half this year's 10, though I can't blame streaming for that: I missed "West Side Story" and "Drive My Car" though those played theatrically around here. Intended to see "WSS" - just didn't get around to it. No interest in "DMC". If it was the last of the 10 I hadn't seen, I would've gone to "complete the set", but since I missed 3 others, I didn't feel that compulsion...

Does he have a moral objection to streaming?
Because that would hilarious.

Tell me if this math adds up.
Is it too early for me or is Oatsass seriously on glue?

For once, Oats isn't talking out of his ass. Supposedly, a film has to make at least double its production costs in order for it to break even, because the film studios get only half of the revenue that a film generates from its theater showings. The rest goes to the movie theaters, distributors, profit-sharing, and to marketing, which isn't included in the production costs. The studios earn additional revenue from streaming and blu-ray sales.

...ago is correct. It isn't just Hollywood's usual "creative accounting" that technically maintains productions in the red for as long as possible. It's the distribution system has always worked.
The cut the distributor gets on a release decreases with time. On the first weekend, it's well above 50%, then on the 7th or 8th weekend, it's well under 50%. Still, theaters need stuff like popcorn and drinks to break even. And the cut is usually lower in foreign markets compared to the US.
Then, even if the studio and the distributor are the same company and marketing gets spent on channels owned by the same group (like, you can make a TV special about a Marvel release on ABC), you need to make at least twice your initial budget to break even.
The standalone Star Wars movie about Han Solo lost money. It cost something like $250M and grossed something like $400M. Black Widow and The Eternals definitely lost money, and got a tepid reception. Shang-Chi may have broken even, but even if it wasn't the case, it's regarded as a hit while the other two are not because even if the box office is low, it was still much more than most releases during the pandemic, and people are definitely interested in a sequel, something that isn't possible for Black Widow and unlikely for The Eternals.
You know, ergonomics.

The way the film business operates determines which films get produced. That's why, for instance, studios rely almost exclusively these days on established properties rather than original ideas or putting together some existing stars. Production costs keep ballooning, and they don't want to risk a production that can easily cost $200M on something with no name recognition. Instead, they'll produce stuff with a name that rings a bell in people's minds, even if it isn't related to film. That's also why there's no longer many mid-budget movies aimed at adults. These crowds watch stuff at home, rather than spending $60 or $80 to bring the whole family at a theater. And studios don't know any longer how to market this, outside of some distributors like Blumhouse or A24 that know to generate buzz for a project.
Otherwise, I fully agree that it's pointless to put yourself in the shoes of a studio exec, especially for the purpose of just guessing whether Marvel will give some obscure character from the comics their own film or will stick to another sequel.

Shit. I got all excited when I saw this thread had been reactivated. I was hoping that Colin was back in prison. What's he been locked up for?

ROLLING STONES 2022 "Sixty" tour of EuropeI've got 3 Stones shows mixed among 3 Gaga shows and 1 Pearl Jam. My 1st trip to continental Europe! Oh, I'm not seeing Gaga 3 times this year. I'm seeing her at least 7 times this year. Only 3 in Europe, though.
