You guys are giving him too much credit. Even if Oatsdead is a concert taper, I'd doubt he's savvy enough to get them onto a Japanese CD label. Most of those concerts get uploaded the very next night they're taped to places like Dimeadozen or The Trader's Den. Then someone smart enough takes those files they downloaded from bit torrent and gets them pressed to silver discs and sells them for $50 a pop or whatever-for a crappy audience recording taped off of a cellphone...so I'm told.

And who would pay for audience recordings of Gaga, Madonna or any other show where most of the stuff is lip synced anyway?

No, you have a point, but Oatie's been at this concert thing a long time, close to fourty years at least- long before the advent of torrents, Dime etc. If he's a taper (looking around on Dime and the Den this morning I couldn't find any conclusive proof, alas) then odds are knowing his lack of morals, scruples etc he's probably sold his tapes in the past, it wouldn't surprise me. Once a pirate, always a pirate.

I was thinking of the Springsteen stuff but kingdiamond made a great point. Thing is, Springsteen is one of the most bootlegged artists out there, up there with Zeppelin and Dylan- if a Japanese bootleg company thought they could make a buck off of a CD of nothing but the Boss farting for eighty minutes, they would because the bootleg companies believe in PT Barnum's old saying about the high birth rate of suckers. If Colin Jacobson is a concert taper who, like many tapers, inadvertently ends up getting their recordings bootlegged simply because they upload to a site like Dime or what have you and then somebody downloads the show and pressed it onto CDs to sell, that's one thing, but if he's taping this shit and then selling the recordings to bootleggers and not sharing them online for free, then he's a bootlegger himself.

I have a recording of damn near every show I've been to. And most of them I "taped" myself. Never tried to make any sorta profit off of it.

I'm just amazed to hear anybody buys bootlegs anymore. But then, I guess I shouldn't be. A friend of mine from work is one of those "physical media only" types and he recently said on Facebook he bought some Zeppelin stuff from Amazon. I just don't get it. Even if you want something to look at, if you have a printer and a decent software program, you can make your own within minutes for free. Hell, you guys are probably right though. If there's a market for a $50 45 RPM repress of Vanilla Fudge from MFSL, there probably is a market for a Springsteen show taped from a Game Boy in West Virginia. I don't understand people, least of all Shitey people.

Most tapers don't (and as a fan of audience concert recordings, I thank you for taping!). But, as his DVD piracy scam shows, caught or not, Jacobson ain't shy about making a few illicit bucks here and there. He WOULD try and make a profit off of it, bank on it.

I don't understand people, least of all Shitey people. Don't be amazed because yer absolutely correct- in spite of the fact that you can log on to a given live music trading site and download an unofficially released concert recording in about five minutes, there are still people out there who insist on holding the physical product, cost be damned (somebody with OCD spending habits like MYKKKE, for example). And like I said if Colin's a bootlegger no way is he taping those shows on a Gameboy- motherfucker probably spent more on a good stealth taping rig than I did on setting up my old home studio (couple grand there on gear and instruments, now my wife's post-Covid home office ) If he can afford to go to all those shows he can afford decent gear to record 'em on too. I should just quit pussyfooting around, go into that goddamn "I've Attended 1000 Concerts!" thread he started and flat out ask him, "So, Colin, have you ever recorded any of these shows you've attended? Ever sold any of yer recordings?" I might even get a straight fuckin' answer (to the first question, at least), but I kinda doubt it...

I'd love for you to ask that question. I've actually had him on ignore for a long time because I find him so obnoxious. But I'd be curious if he gives you an answer.

Given that we know many SHiTEs lurk here (including Oatsdead himself for all we know) I decided to play it safe and pose the question to the discussion participants in general. So the bait has been set...might be all for nothing, though, because for all of Colin's bragging in that thread not once does he allude to taping any of those shows. Which is too bad, because I so wanted to be right about him being a bootlegger, dammit! May end up exposing one or two others', though, mind ya...
